I\'m trying without much luck to track down my gggrandparents, I have very little info to go on.. but.. hoping someone might beable to assidt, or recommend a site tosearch from...

person I\'m looking for is: James charles - born- I\'m guessing in the 1840\'s . the name \"Charles\" was his new name taken when he (or he and family) moved from Italy to the UK, scotland, he later married Marion - her surname I do not know. Would there be any site that is searchable for people either leaving Italy to the UK, or Entering the Uk, immigration stats perhaps? or...?? or is there perhaps again.. some searchable register for people who registered new surnames.
would he have changed his surname Before leaving Italy? or after arrival in the UK?
:-0 thanks for any help
(ps.. email reply is welcome )

There is no name change register that I am aware of and since you don\'t know the wife\'s maiden name it is very difficult. The name was undoubtedly changed by the English (the english even changed the names of Giovanni and Sebastiano Caboto. the explorers whom the english call John and Sebastian Cabot) to Charles. If you know the town of origin in Italy, it may perhaps be of help but even that is slim pickings. Peter
