Savini - Sabine ???

Postby Pasqualine » 02 Sep 2002, 02:45

My grandmother was a Savini. I have her heritage traced back to Pietro, born around 1582.

My question is, could the name \'Savini\' be an Italianization of the Latin word \'Sabines\'? I\'ve noticed that the surname exists ALL over the map of Italy, from top to toe, and is native to each area. If it is, indeed, the Italian name given to the Sabines of ancient times, that would explain its widespread nativity. Of course, if this is the fact, it leads to another question:

Who were the Sabines? Where did they originate, and did they simply assimilate into the population or what? The only reference I\'ve ever seen is the painting, \"Rape of the Sabines\". If they were a viable tribe, wouldn\'t they have been mentioned in ancient writings?

The only record is that of a Afrisano Savini born in 1590 in an unknown place. There is no connection with a \"San Pietro\" whose location is unknown to me as well. Peter

Who is Afrisano Savini? Is that someone I should look into? Never heard that name. And San Pietro? Never heard of it.

I wasn\'t looking for any assistance with the Savini line, only with the name and the history of it.
