I am researching the family name of Candia or Candie (has been shown with both spellings. This is a very confusing surname as there are many place names of Candia. Has anyone run across this as a surname before. My ancestor, Frank Candia, is shown as being born in Italy.

All help would be appreciated.

The surname Candie is non existent while there are 311 surnames Candia in Italy. Consequently Candia is the correct spelling. The surname is not listed as an Italian surname in the surname dictionary indicating thast it is a local surname. The majority of Candia surnamed persons are in Sicilky and Calabria with scatterings to the north of Italy. There are only three towns with the town name Candia. One is simply Candia and the other two are Candia followed by another word so there should not be any confusion since geography and persons surname are mutually exclusive of one another. Peter

Thank you for the clarification. This definitely helps me at least eliminate the \"Candie\". I will try to locate the family in the areas you have suggested. Once again, many thanks.
