Research Help from above. . .

I would like to hear know if some of you have received help from above or just a thought that entered your mind from seeming nowhere, when reaching what seems to be at a dead end. ?

I have a few stories of my own, to tell but will tell a story of a friend in Italy.

My friend Antonio, a researcher of 10 years came accross a certain Martin Perin born in the early 1600's. This Martin was a Notaio or an attorney in the area. Antonio searched high and low and could not find any dates on Martin. He checked the State Archives in the area as well.

Finally, Antonio said "basta" enough of this and stopped researching. Then every morning at 2:00 am he was awaken in his sleep to think about this Martin Perin. Antonio said "basta again" I am finished with this guy.

But, Antonio tells me that after a month, he was fourced to research the Martin Perin name. A thought came to contact the monks of Conegliano, they have some records of sorts. The second page he opened, was a Martin Perin with his date of birth and the parish that he was born in.

Antonio then went to that exact parish and found his direct ancestor.

Now what is to be made of all of this? I believe that Martin Perin wanted to be found. The help to find Martin came from somewhere else.

Funny you should mention this...

I have just started researching microfilms over the last few weeks..twice now I was about to give up on looking for an ancestor when I turned the film to wind it and when I stop, I stopped on the exact page I was looking for...

I already mentioned this one to you when we spoke, but for the others ...

I have only recently started researching my wife, Jennifer's, family and had moderate luck, until one day when I had the sudden urge to research her maternal grandmother's married name ... unusual for me, I started with a general google search. The first 3 listing were information that I had posted ... the fourth was one of her cousins ... apparently my wife's branch had been lost as both her grandfather and father passed away about the same time when she was very young.

Now, we have hundreds of relatives and lots of family information to work with ... they have no dedicated genealogist for this branch ... everyone knows the history.

Jen is loving the stories that we are starting to get ...

back in June I searched for three hours at a parish called Domege di Cadore. The records in the 1700's were in Latin, smudged and just hard to read. After Three hours, eyes hurt, from so much sight reading, so I left.

I was feeling kind down as I walked away.

A thought came into my mind. . . to return to the Valle di Cadore parish, where I had worked a year earlier. There were two books on top of the book case that were not there a year earlier. They were of a census tpye. Census books are usually in alphabetical order and I found my Maria Vittor Barnabo born 15 Dec 1755 from Domege wtih ease.

I later returned to Domege and found her birth act, together with her father, grandfather, mother's names. The writing was very messy and one had to be right on top of it to see them. Somes the priests crowd all the writing very close together, which makes it almost like a run on sentence.

Also, in this parish as in many parishes the surname I am researching is very common and the first name are almost the same. I will have to write down all of the Barnabo s to get a clear picture for 20 years.

For instance the father of Maria Vittoria is listed as Bapt and the grandfather is listed as bapt as well. Not being too familuar with that area, Bapt could be Baptista or his birth name could be Giovanni Battista or Zuanne or even Johanes. Latin records can be fun.

I started my quest because of a dream. My dad died in 1963. He knew he was dying and wanted to go back to Sicily to be with his ancestral family. He spent his last three weeks in the U.S. with me. His birthday is 11/11 and every year I take some time alone to 'spend with him'. I just relax and remember him. About 10 years ago I had a dream that we were sitting in my kitchen and he was telling me about our Sicilian family. He wrote names and events on a paper. I still remember that dream vividly. Some of the names I research are ones that I remember from that dream although I was never able to read the information on the paper, but I have been able to link the names I heard in that dream to my tree. I'm sure I heard these names as a child but most of them only came back to me in that dream.

Your story about a dream reminds me of a dream I had about 4 years ago.
I Had been told by my mother that my grandmother's church had burned down in Cimetta, (TV), Italy and all the records were destroyed on my grandmother Regina Vendrame.

I had a pain in my heart for years . . then at a certain point, I decited to find a way to research the Vendrame line. I had four lines of a type written trust document to go on, written in 1922. I took the document to Italy and asked a cousin, who's father was in it. She said just a minute and came back with a six page document of 1917. I learned about my gggrand father Girolamo Vendrame.

Later, when I arrived back in the US, I had a dream, where I saw Girolamo . . . he was standing next to me as I sat at the kitchen table. Not much was said, but I still remember to this date his stature, shape of face and the feeling I was left with. I was determined to find a way to research his ancestry.

It turned out that the records at his parish were misplaced in the "Cantina" wine cellar for years on end, two of the marriage books had been burned, because a priest in the 1800's had died from the black plague. Then in recent years the books were organized and placed in the parish office.

I now have the Vendrame lines back to the early 1600's, by in part of the dream I had that gave me encouragement to keep digging and not to take no for an answer.

I'm first generation American. My Dad spoke of the people and culture back in Sicily while I was growing up, consequently I find the people I connect to almost familiar though I've only met very few of them and that was 50-60 years ago.

I wish I had kept a journal all those years ago.
