Surname Ciarla/Ciarlo to Charles

My grandfather came to the USA in 1900... his given name was Raffaele Ciarla - his name was then change to Frank Charles. I am needing more info on his parents - Giuseppe Ciarla and Maria Tamilio.

Great Grandfather - Raimondo Giuseppe Ciarla Married Maria Tamilio. They had four children Marie (1893) Luisa (b1895), Mary (1897), Raffaele (1900) that were born in Italy. Campobasso.

Giuseppe and his brother Leonardo travel to the USA around 1900 through NYC. They traveled thier way to Auburn NY, they sent for their families in 1904.

Somehow during the naturalization the last name Ciarla turned into Charles.

maybe the mother surname could be D'Emilio and no Tamilio; in this ship's manifest Maria Leonarda D'Emilio in travel with the children: Incoronata, Maria Lucia, Maria Giuseppa, and Raffaele, arrived in USA the Oct 23, 1905, joining Giuseppe Ciarla husband/father in Auburn NY...

Hi Suanj.......

The manifest you found matches the date of immigration on the 1910 census!!

And note the person living with the family, Michael Tamaila, he is not listed as a relative, but as a boarder.

As of this census, it appears they are not yet naturalized.

I checked Leonardo's manifest and WW1 draft registration......the address
is a match, same street, and the town of origin is on the manifest:

The poster has enough info to send for documents on the children, and perhaps to discover the parents of Raimondo and Maria.

Lee you mentioned that there is enough enough on the poster to send for doc on the children? What poster and what docs? I was told that Lenoardo and Raimondo traveled together from Italty to USA, but only Lenoardo name was on the maifest?

Susan: the 1910 Cenus is correct.

My Grandparents:
Raffaele Ciarla became naturalized in 1939 and his name was changed to Frank Charles. However, he married Grazia Capaldi in 1929.

No need to send to Italy for documents........Suanj posted a link to microfilmed records for the town of interest.....with these, you can search all birth, marriage and death records from 1809 thru 1900.

Guide to using this resource as written by member Trish:

The proper way of obtaining microfilm from a Family History Center
1. You go to www.familysearch.org

2. Click on the tab on the top right called Library

3. Click on the words Family History Library Catalog

4. Click on the words Place Search and type in the town you are looking for. Then click the word search.

5. A list of the results will show up. (an example: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

6. Click on the link you are looking for such a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Vital Records. A new page will appear where it will show all the films for Vital Records

7. Click on the link you want such as Death Registries.

8. Click on View Film Notes and a list of the microfilm numbers will appear.

9. Click at the bottom of the page, For a printable copy, click hereand you will get a form to print out with all the film numbers.

10. Click print.

Ordering Microfilm

1. Now the FHC does not have all the microfilm in their possession.

2. You have to order the microfilm which takes 3-4 weeks for it to arrive.

3. It costs about $5.75 a roll for 30 days of viewing time.

4. If you need to renew the microfilm, it cost about $5.50 for another 60 days.

5. If you need to renew it after the 60 days, it will cost another $5.50 and the films can be kept on an indefinite bases.

6. Microfilm must be viewed at the FHC.

7. Copies are $0.35 a page.

Hi Wldspirit!

Been on the go...to Ohio, to Maryland, then other parts of N. Carolina. Gone not that long, but a lot to do so it seems like it was a long time. Saw two baseball games...one in Cincinnati, one in Cleveland. Great fun. Even had time to stop in Frederick Maryland to check out the historical society and the cemetery. What a wonderful town...very quaint, beautiful, narrow row houses of brick, downtown very much alive!

Even got to Little Italy in Cleveland....what wonderful people. My daughter had the greatest time!

Missed you as well....I live for Italian genealogy. Hope to get back to Massachusetts later this summer...have a lot more research to do and it is so far away!

Well, got to get everything back in order here so I can head to the library this afternoon....I have having withdrawal symptoms!

(the full name should be Ciarla and Pietrollino on the names that were cut short in the boxes)

Giovanvincenzo was dead before the birth of his son. I couldn't find a record for Iacovino in Ripabottoni at the time. It was a name in Casacalenda, so I checked those records...but no Michele there during that period of time when Carmela should have been born. No birth record for her in Casacalenda in a 10 year period covering when her birth should have occurred. She may have been born in another comune altogether.

Raimondo Giuseppe Antonio Michele Ciarla and to his wife
Maria Leonarda Tamilia on
23 April 1893

Maria Lucia Ciarla was born to
Raimondo Giuseppe Antonio Michele Ciarla and to his wife
Maria Leonarda Tamilia on
19 April 1895.
