Hi,
I believe that your ancestor, Domenico, married at Ida( sometimes she was called also Agata) in St James, LA;
maybe finding the marriage record( 1907/8 abt) you can descover the italian birthplace of Domenico;
The Accardo was also sicilians; I made a short search, and I believe that Ida/Agata parents was: Filippo Accardo ( abt 1860 IT-22 sep 1945 LA, USA) and Vincenza Calamia ( 1856 IT-1904 LA, USA; the second wife of Filippo was Rose Sirome( spell??);
Filippo death:

Mother's Name Ida Accardo( nee Salvato)
Film number 1221058

Filippo arrived in 1888 alone:

no birthplace .. but he was born in Trapani province, Sicily, IT

Vincenza Calamia and little son, Giuseppe Accardo arrived after:

in travel with Vincenzo Calamia and Caterina Fontana maybe brother and sister in law..

Giuseppe Calamia was born the 13 nov 1888; all other childrens was born in Louisiana; in 1900 census the family was resident in St James, LA:

I believe that, MAYBE, also Domenico DiMattia coming from same sicilian area.. the problem is to find the right surname spelling( in Sicily: Di Mattia, Di Matteo, Di Mattea, De Matteo, Demattia, Di Mattei) and to find the arrival...
if you can find the marriage act in St James it will help...

Since I don't have paid subscriptions to any genealogy websites, I can't search for Port of New Orleans arrivals. Sorry I can't help with this.

Here is the manifest for Domenico. His last place of residence is actually Gibellina (Trapani, Sicily). It also looks like he is going to "father" Giuseppe in LaPlace, La. You take a look :-)

The ship sailed from Palermo.

Tessa,

I asked my mother about Domenico's brother and she doesn't think he ever had a brother. Giuesppe must be the father, which would make sense to place him with his wife in St. James Parish.

I think I'll adjust my search for Giuseppe (Joe, Jos) as the father with no children arriving with his wife in 1897 at age 55.

What do you think?

Don't think the manifest for "brother" Giuseppe above is correct. Looks like he was going to "Father" Giuseppe...

T.

Yes, I agree...as I stated in an earlier post...he is going to "father" Giuseppe, so the 1903 manifest above is not his...

BUT...the manifest in 1904 going to Father Giuseppe certainly looks good! :-) Line 14

Tessa I believe you right abt ship's manifest; Domenico travelled with Calamias, and the mother of Ida/Agata Accardo, she was Vincenza Calamia... Hugs,

Your Dominic?

Social Security Death Index
about Domenico Dimattia
Name: Domenico Dimattia
SSN: 439-66-6313
Last Residence: 70802 Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States of America
Born: 5 Mar 1886
Died: May 1967
State (Year) SSN issued: Louisiana (1962)

You can request Dominic's SS application which will include his place of birth in Italy...

http://genealogy.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi= ... t/main.jsp

With his place of birth, parents' names, and his Date of birth, you will then be able to write directly to the comune in Italy for his birth record. This will give information about his parents, including their age and place of birth, and occupation. If they were born in same comune, you can then request their birth and marriage records to follow the family back in time.

Form letters in Italian for writing to the comune...

I just applied for a copy Dominico's SS application. I can't wait to see it. I hope it provides information about his place of birth. I would use it to write for more information.

I've had no luck in finding more information on his father Giuseppe or mother. I'm lost when it comes to finding non-united states information.

Hi Rob,

You should hear from SS fairly quickly... :-D

When you find out his place of birth, not only can you write to the comune, but you can do some of your own "sleuthing" at your local LDS Family History Center. They may have microfilm available for Domenico's comune. Are you familiar with them?

They have civil records for "Gibellina, Trapani, Sicily" (last residence indicated on Domenico's manifest) for 1821-1910 which includes births (nati), deaths (morti), and marriages (matrimoni).

http://familysearch.org/eng/library/fhl ... +Gibellina

Find the nearest by entering your zip code at the bottom of this webpage.

We can help when you are ready...
