Churches in Little Italy, Montreal: Farrese

Attempting to find the place of baptism for Gaetano, Luigi, Alfredo and Ida Farrese (or Farese or Faresse, etc). This is for the years 1903 to 1909. The family lived in Little Italy, 2504 ST. Laurent Blvd in Montreal in 1911. All the children born after 1911 were baptised in Madonna della Defesa. But cannot determine where they would have been baptised before that date.

I have checked out St. Jean di la Crouix for this period and find nothing and that is the only other church I know of within walking distance of this address. Of course, they could have lived elsewhere prior to this...only arrived after 1902 I believe.

Checked out Notre Dame Cathedral, but no luck. Any ideas on where to look?

"All that was Italian in Montreal were the two parishes,
Madona del Monte Carmel and Madonna della Difesa.
In 1905, when the first Italian parish was founded, there
were already 5,000 people of Italian origin in Montreal.
By 1930, the community had between 30,000 and 35,000
members.
Monte Carmelo included the southern part of the city
and Madonna della Defisa the northern part, The latter
was the larger of the two."

Went through the records, but the church records only begin in 1906 and none of the family is there. However, it was like reading the records from my area of Molise. All the names of the Italians were very familiar. And I have another source to check when I have lookups to do.

Now, off to see if I can find another church....

Hi Susan, I may have something in common with you and I am very excited!
I'm researching a "Frank" (Francesco) Farese who lived in Montreal. What I know for sure is that he had a daughter named Angelina Farese b.1902 d. 1933. According to verbal history the Fareses were the first ones to make ricotta in Montreal, and they had three daughters: Angelina, Ida, and Marie. However there may be more children..

What I've found and don't have confirmation but have a good feeling about are 2 Ellis Island ship manifests for Francesco Farese who came from Canza, Avellino, IT. in 1907 and again in 1909. According to the age during his trips I'd put his birth year at around 1882.

Francesco Ferrise was born in 1872 in Piane Crati, Cosenza, Italy. He married the sister of my great grandmother, Filomena DiPalma from Ripabottoni.

I have been in contact with at least 3 other people connected to this line. And while it is really an offshoot of my direct line, I have done a lot of research on it and have all sorts of documents. I even tracked Francesco's brothers and sisters to Montreal and the US> His father was Lucantonio who died in Italy. His mother, Cecilia Nino came to the US via Montreal.

The children of Francesco Ferrise (Faresse) and Filomena Dipalma are:

Maria Angeline born 30 Oct 1902
Gaetano born 26 Jan 1904
Joseph Louis born 30 July 1905

Filomena Dipalma died in 1940 and Francesco in 1949.
