I will let others assist with most of your questions. But... please keep this in mind: Google Maps and Wikipedia are your friends!

Capriati a Volturno is a comune (village/town) within the province of Caserta. As you can see on this Google map, it is about an hour from the main city of Caserta.

This Wikipedia page offers some details on Comune di Capriati a Volturno, including a link to the comune's official website.

[edit]

Also, the Italian telephone directory turns up four listings for the name Gianfrancesco in present-day Capriati a Volturno.

[edit again]

Zooming in on the previously linked google map reveals a surprise: a major road through the area named Via John Fitzgerald Kennedy!

I am map challenged.
I will write letters to the 4 addresses found, however, I believe Gallo, Caserta is more than likely where the family relocated. Many died there.
I am told Pietro's land was Olive trees to make olive oil that he gave his niece.
Comune di Gallo and Comune di Gallo Matese are just 7.5 miles west of Capriati a Volturno. Click here.

Also, there are even more Gianfrancesco's in Gallo Matese: Telephone directory.

It still amazes me that the men left their families never to return!
Started over, as did my Grandmother.
Still wonder about her first husband, I don't think he died and I think they may have had a child unless he had a marriage before her- this is truly skeletons being dug up.
It was very common for the men to come over first to check things out, look for work, find a place to live, etc. They would then send for their family, sometimes one, two, three years later.

As you can imagine, much can happen when husband and wife are apart for a period of years, especially when the only means of maintaining contact was by letters.
