Can anyone help?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Can anyone help?

Post by Mike650 »

I'm looking to find out as much information about my Grandfather,
Michelle Gallucci.
Born in San-Marco la Catola IT.
WWII was captured in North Africa, Tripoli.
Brought over to England, only known camp was his last camp near Bingham in Nottinghamshire.

does anyone have any ideas, where i can

a) find what unit he was in?
b) find out his movements between camps?
c) find out anything?

Hoping to upload a couple of photos of him in his uniform.

Try www.nottsfhs.org.uk for their information on WW11 Italian POWs in Nottinghamshire. =Peter=

As to the unit he was in, etc, try requesting his military records from the provincial archives. A letter such as the following should do the trick:

02 gennaio 2010

[your name]
[your address]

Archivio di Stato di Foggia
Piazza XX Settembre, 3
71100 Foggia
ITALY

Egregii Signori,

Mi chiamo [your name here], ed abitare negli Stati Uniti all'indirizzo sopradetto.

Distinti saluti,

[your signature]

Full names should be written in lastname firstname format in all caps, thus "SMITH JOHN". Dates should be written dd month yyyy with the month spelled out in all lower case (01 febbraio 1885).

Basically, the letter says,

Dear sirs,

My name is ... I live in the United States of America at the address above.

I am requesting the full military discharge records and conscription record for my grandfather who was born in ... on ... His father's name was ... and his mother's maiden name was...

I will be pleased to reimburse you for the cost of copying and postage if you will let me know the amount.

Sincerely,

You could try making the request by email (as-fg@.beniculturali.it); personally I prefer the formality of a written letter. The cost usually comes to just a few Euros.

Dear John I hope we can get the LDS to come up with a standard Italian Army request letter. I will contact you Monday and keep you and Lilbees abreast of developments. Happy New Year

The email address had an extra "dot" the correct one is

as-fg@beniculturali.it

I believe that John took it from this website: http://www.archivi.beniculturali.it/UCB ... ome=FOGGIA
on the same page, a few lines below you can find the correct e-mail address
