Occupation: Castaldo

Post by Zullo »

I just found the death certificate of an ancestor, Salvatore Cavallaro, who died in Acireale, Catania in 1838. It lists his and his father Michele's occupations as "Castaldo". Does anyone know what a "Castaldo" is? I can't find it in the dictionary or in the list of Italian words for occupations.

See http://www.etimo.it/?term=castaldo

"Castaldo" is a person that administers the goods of another person.

Castalda is defined inthe Italian dictionary as a stewardess while Castaldo is a majordomo. =Peter=

The Garzanti on-line gives the following Translation

1 land agent, steward
2 (st.) steward: - del re, the king's steward
3 (region.) (lavoratore agricolo) agricultural labourer, farm worker.

I would suggest that "caretaker" seems a more likely modern English translation than "stewardess" (which most people associate with the cabin steward on an airliner.
