Tarsitano- looking for the name of the village

Post by BonnieM »

that my nonna came from. She was born in Napoli in 1888 (according to the 1900 census) but that was just the point of departure. They were from a village called San Pietro di ... There are many San Pietro di something. Her parents were Teresa Brescia and Giuseppe Tarsitano. Any one ever have any luck getting information from Napoli?

thank you!!

Thank you Romano. We hope to visit Sicilia one day. My nonna's family originally came through Bari from Albania. They spoke Albanese which is recognized by the Italian government as an official Italian dialect. I know there must be a birth record in Napoli I just don't know which channels to go through. I think being there in person to request it may help and we are going to try to do that in May.

Thank you Suanj,

They were on their way to America and my bisnonna was pregnant. She was traveling with her father. They were robbed and had to wait in Napoli, the port of departure, and my nonna was born there. I don't know the village that they were from.

Yes Suanj, this is them. Funny, we JUST found this during research at the National Archives on Saturday. Other than her death certificate this is the only document I have for her and her family. I have looked, and looked in the Ellis Island site but cannot find them on any manifest. That is where I was hoping to find the name of the village where they came from. Are you in Italy or in the US? Thank you!!

They immigrated in 1890, so on ellisisland.org website you cannot find it.. better to search in castlegarden.org website... I found a GPPE. CARSITANO LABORER age 29, male, ship INDIA, origin Italy, arrived 10 Jul 1890, port of embarkation CATANIA & NAPLES, destination NEW YORK
http://www.castlegarden.org/quick_searc ... id=8274976
I believe that the wife could be liste as "moglie" and the daughter as "figlia"... by castlegarden input I searched on ancestry.com and here the ship's manifest:
second sheet, line 11

http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/5438/t ... pe1890.jpg
sure is TARSITANO Giuseppe.. the wife and daughter can be in other sheet or travelled after some time.. but in dec 1890 the family was in USA...

suanj
