Researching these names in Sicily mostly in Fiumefreddo

Post by Lili2 »

I'm currently researching the Civil Registration records of Fiumefreddo di Sicilia. Im up to records dating 1820-1860. While this side of my family comes from Fiumefreddo as Ive gone back through the registrations Im finding that more and more of them were born elsewhere. This makes sense as I think Fiumefreddo isnt a very old town.
The following names are all in my family tree (if there is a ? its because the spelling is uncertain):

Calabrese Born in Ficarra, Sicily
Agati? Born in Ficarra, Sicily
Spina
Amanti Born in Mascali, Sicily
Marino Born in Mascali, Sicily
Nicotra
Melita
Copani? Born in Mascali, Sicily
Patane` Born in Napoli, Italy
Crisafulli
Mudo`?
Sciacca Born in Piedmonte Etneo, Sicily
Mangano
Pennisi
Zappala`
Gullo?
Manitta?
Zagami Born in Giampilieri, Sicily
Micale Born in Giampilieri, Sicily
Aloisi Born in Giampilieri, Sicily
Amato Born in Giampilieri, Sicily

If anyone would like to share information about these names it would be much appreciated.
As you can see Im not certain about the spelling of some of the names as the records are difficult to read. For eg. With the name Gullo, Ive seen it as Gollo, Gulli and also with an accent on the end.

Thanks Tessa!

Hi MBisFrenchy, Unfortunately I don't know the origins of the name Patane`. Tessa's weblink is helpful. So based on the info from this weblink it is a Sicilian name from Catania.

Even though my ancestor was born in Napoli he lived and married in Fiumefreddo di Sicilia. So Im guessing his mother (whose name is unknown) was from Napoli and his father or father's family moved him to Sicily.

All the best with your search.

Liliana
My family are from Sicily: Fiumefreddo, Ficarra, Giampilieri, Cumia, Messina and Carmela Zagami,Argentina.
