I've been unsuccessful in finding the immigration record of my great-grandmother and her daughter, and I could use some ideas.
My GGM was born as Giovanna Maria Poncia in Garzeno, Como, Italy, on 19 May 1877. She married Domenico Celeste Poncia on 27 May 1900. Later that year, he immigrated to the States, ending up in Northern California. Giovanna stayed behind, had a child, Maria, born 23 Feb 1901. Then the mother and daughter immigrated to join Domenico in California.
The various census records from 1910 and 1920 indicate that Giovanna and Maria immigrated in 1902. I've used the Morse pages to search the Ellis Island database for them, using various spellings and wildcards and combinations of years, but I come up empty. What now??

only the oldest daughter, Maria, was born in Italy, all other children born in California... I searched, but really I think that in some way the surname maybe is misspelled on ellisisland... I searched by various spelling and no luck... seeming that Celeste, Giovanna and little Maria emigrated all in 1901....

"are these dates correct?
children:
Mary Poncia born 24 Feb 1901 IT
Peter Poncia born 3 Feb 1903 CA
Thank you"
Yes, those are the right children. (Mary was actually born on the 23rd, but the record date is the 24th.)
Thank you all for thinking about this. The husband definitely immigrated alone in 1900, according to his manifest, and his wife and daughter had to have shown up and before mid-1902, given Peter's birthdate in California. But when and how?
Thank you, VJ! I'm anxious to see this, but the link is not working for me. Any chance of posting the text manifest so that I could get to it by ship/date on Ellis Island? (Sorry!)
Jerry
That's it, Valerie! Passage paid by husband/father Celeste. This missing piece of the family story has been bedeviling me for months. I don't know how you thought to look for "Tonia" or "Jonua", but I'm so glad you did. Thank you very much.
