Name chagnes and unkown ships. Help please!!!

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Name chagnes and unkown ships. Help please!!!

Post by rgmills25 »

I long ago gave up on finding out anything on my Italian ancestors but I've recently decided to pursue it again.

I don't have much information and I'll try to make what information I have precise and easy to understand

My ggGrandfathers American name was Adam Lawrence who settled in Dallas, TX. According to the 1930 census he was 49, so an estimated year of birth of 1881. His wife "Lena" and two children Bernnie and Rosie living with him. My gGrandmother, Mary, had already moved out and was already married.

I was told by my grandma that his Italian name was Adam DiLorenzo, even though Adam doesn't sound very Italian to me. So I'm unsure if it was acutally something different or not. She also tells me that her grandmothers name was Patricia DiGillio or something like that.

So I know that they departed from Palermo in 1904. My grandmother said that Patricia was pregnant with Mary during the trip and I know that Mary was born on January 23, 1905 in Plaquemines Parish, LA, even though I haven't seen a bc. She also said that once they arrived in Ellis Island, they went through Chicago on their way to Louisiana.

Hmm, lets see.... what else do you need to know. Obviously, I've already tried searching through the ellisisland site. I'm sure it's a classic case of a misspelling or a name change problem. I've tried figuring out which ships traveled Palermo to NY in 1904 but have hit dead ends that way too.

If anyone has any information that will help me find records for these people I would really appreciate it. I'm totally at a loss for where to look next.

TY Deb

It also looks like that census says that their year of immigration was 1903 and not 1904.

Did Adam end up in Chicago by the 1940? Is the name Mary Bruotts familiar? I am looking at WWII draft cards.

I have no idea where he went without asking my grandmother and I can't get a hold of her at the moment. But yes, that name is familiar. I don't know who she is, but when my grandmother originally was giving me information, I wrote down the name Mary Bert or Berts. Spelling is probably off.

TY again for your help

also, I think the Bernnie might be Bermie. The cursive had 3 humps instead of 2 sets of 2.

RG...

I am in the same boat...no pun intended...

First as much as our elders are great help..their memories or the ones they were "told" to remember don't always equal.

First thing I noticed was your gma name "Lena"
This was Americanized...and it shows on the census Deb posted
Her name was "petrina" My Gma was Franchesca which ended up "mary frances" go figure..my Mother is 70 and her name was something completely different as well

Another thing is I bet they came into New Orleans instead of Ellis Island
Because of the timing of the Birth of your Gma..Check those ship records

I am 100% Italian....I am trying to puzzle my family together with SEVERAL surnames...

My paternal side jjeezzzz I will NEVER figure it out. My maiden name I recently found out was NOT my family name...thanks Gpa
I am also getting conflicting reports on Villages (commune)..

Good Luck..I just started and I am now planning my trip to SLC

We haven't found your Italian names yet. Just trying to gather the facts on the family and work backwards.

Based on the death cert, I do not believe the WW II draft card belongs to your ancestor. Doesn't look as if he was in Chicago and the DOB is wrong. Please confirm.

We need to find a 1910 census. Do you know where the family was in 1919? LA? Texas? or somewhere in between?

We also know the region of Italy - Sicily

My grandma was born in 1924. Her mom, Mary, marrying in 1923 when she was 18. Her younger siblings Bennie and Rosie that were listed on the 1930 census list Louisiana as their state of birth, so I think the family remained there until at least 1915. Tomorrow I'll either talk to my grandma or my great-aunt and ask if they know when the family moved to TX.

I tend to agree about the military records. I'll confirm tomorrow.

TY!!!
