According to the Castle Garden web site, Ellis Island opened in 1892 and prior to that immigrants were processed by the individual states. My problem is this... My great grandfather emigrated to New Jersey in 1882 from Italy. I am trying to obtain the Ship Manifest documenting his arrival. My problem is that I can't find it anywhere. Did Castle Garden, in New York, process for New Jersey as well? I searched Castle Garden online and did not find him there either. His name was Domenico Feminella and arrived in 1882 according to the 1910 census.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks to all.

Immigration Points in 1882?
Re: Immigration Points in 1882?
Do you know what year and in what town your GGF was born? Any additional information you provide will help us to assist you.
Early manifests provide very little information.
This manifest for SS Caldera, arriving 13 September 1881 shows a Feminella (no first name), 23, farmer, arriving from Italy. Look at the 5th line after the fold in the paper.

Re: Immigration Points in 1882?
Jim,
Not sure if you have these, but there may be more clues
Also, have you looked for his naturalization records?
You may be able to get them from the county clerk of Union County *
Although pre 1906 records don't have much information on them, you may get lucky

Re: Immigration Points in 1882?
Thanks, Valarie...
1867 birth would make him about 15 when he arrived in 1882. That helps alot.

Re: Immigration Points in 1882?
Thank you all for your responses. According to the 1910 census, my GGF came here in 1882 at the age of 15 from Italy. Nobody in our family knows where in Italy he was from, but I don't believe he came from Sicily. He was an only child and his widoed mother, Maria, followed alone in 1885 when she was 50.
I did find him in the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 census, but I have not been able to find him in the 1890 census yet.
Tessa78, You are correct. He was born in 1867. I don't think what you posted below is my GGF because he would be too old.
Would he have come through Castle Garden in 1882?
Thank you all for your interest and help!!!
