1930 Census Record Question

Post by Drew927 »

While reviewing a 1930 Census record, I noticed under the section for naturalization the letters PA are entered. I know that AL indicates Alien, but what does PA indicate?

Does anyone have an idea?

"First Papers" That means first papers were filed for naturalization. In order for naturalization to have taken place, a formal document would then have to be submitted.

PA = First Papers = Declaration of Intent

Keep in mind that census info is all based on "self-reporting" and did not need to be proved. In a case such as this, the person may or may not have really filed a Declaration of Intent (although he probably did) and may or may not have followed through/actually completed naturalization.

I was also wondering what the letters ab. next to two of the childrens names meant.

"Ab or ab—Indicates a temporary absence at the time of the census. This means the person lived at the residence, but was not present at the time the census was taken. This abbreviation is usually found following the name or relationship."
