Help with Naro in Alabama

Post by dixiecricket13 »

Hi - I am trying to document my husband's family. I have almost no information about them and would love if someone can help fill in some details. What I know:

Shirley and Philip Rose Naro, Jr. (brother and sister) born in Ensley/Birmingham, AL.
Their parents are Philip Rose Naro, Sr. and Mary Tortorice (I think born in the US)
Paternal grandparents (I think) are Rosario Naro and Beuna "Bernice" Milazzo from Bisacquino.
Maternal grandparents (I think) are Guiseppe (Joe) Tortorice and Frances Salvagio from Bisacquino.

I have heard differing stories about immigration through Ellis Island and New Orleans so I don't know what is true and am having a lot of difficulty creeping through all of immigrants from this time frame. Please help if you can. Thanks! C Naro

Hello C Naro! Welcome to the forum :-)

Do you have any birthdates for the relatives you mention above? It would be most helpful...

Yes, I have a few dates.

Philip Rose Naro, Jr. was born Feb 23, 1942
Philip Rose Naro, Sr. was born Jul 25, 1907
Mary Tortorice Naro was born Feb 13, 1916
Rosario Naro was born approx. 1864 in Italy
Beuna "Bernice" Millazzo Naro Carbonie was born approx. 1876 in Italy
Guiseppe "Joe" Tortorice was born Dec 17, 1886 in Italy
Frances Salvagio Naro was born approx. 1884 in Italy

The dates for the grandparents were all found through research so they may or may not be the correct dates but it's been hard to track everything through all of the misspellings of last names, common names, etc...

Thank you!

Hello :D ,
I was looking at your research on your family pages on ancestry "Naro Family Tree"
Are there any US records that you are missing?
Thank you, Valarie

When you say that the dates were found from research, what kinds of documentation are you referring to? Do you have census records, WWI and WWII registration cards, US passports? Just so we don't duplicate efforts.

Thanks

Yes. First of all, I would like confirmation that I have documented the correct people. Furthermore, I would like to get as much information on the grandparents as I can, full names, actual birth dates, birth places, marriage records, where they entered the US, etc..., and I would love if I go a generation even further back but I don't know that this is possible.

I have looked through Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org. Names and dates don't necessarily agree across the two but I don't know what source is 100% accurate. I have tried to merge the data that I think is most correct.

Christina,
Here's a possible 1903 manifest (under Giuseppe Tartsrier on ancestry)
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/773/1903q.jpg
line 2
Palermo to New Orleans
Month matches the Declaration of Intention on your family pages, year of arrival is off by two, 1903 instead of 1901
Name is correct, last residence is correct, destination is in AL
Age is off by 7-8 years? He should be abt 19, not 26

Hello again Christina,

No source is 100% correct which is why we all do what you are doing...looking for confirmation. Sometimes it is a long and tedious process, but sometimes we get lucky!

We'll do our best for you! BTW, Valarie is one of the best researchers here at the forum... and there are many others!

Yes they did have another son who was killed. The spelling of Bernice's name is different in this record so I stayed with the spelling that I had, Millazzo. I

Here is response by Valarie to a earlier post regarding records in Bisacquino...

Your local Family History Center has microfilm you can order for Bisacquino
But, the civil records only cover 1820-1864
www.familysearch.org/e...umns=*,0,0

In case you aren’t familiar with the Family History Center & Italian records

FamilySearch Home Page
Includes how to find your nearest local Family History Center

I noticed on your Famiy Tree site that you have a Naturalization record for Mariano Naro...how does he relate to the above family?
