Sebastiano Faoro

Post by nonna49 »

My Italian surname is Faoro, and my grandfather was Sebastiano Faoro from Arsie Belluno, although on some records it is listed as 'Orse Bellisno'.

Sebastiano was born March 10, 1887 to Sebastiano Faoro and Angelina Gobbio. Their other children were:

Antonio
Abel
Josephine
Maria
Elilzabeth

Antonio and Sebastiano went to USA about 1904, Antonio eventually returned to Italy permanently, Sebastiano remained in the USA until his death in 1976.

Any help on the location, church, villiage and family would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Nonna49! Welcome to the forum :-)

Here is a manifest for Sebastiano and Antonio. Do you have this?

1904 SS La Savoie arriving NY, 29 October from Havre
Line 3
Sebastiano Faoro, 20, single, laborer from Orsie Belluno, going to Spring Valley, Ill (Priusville was lined out and Spring Valley written above)...going to cousin Gusaliho (sp?) Madalozzo

Line 4
Antonio Faoro, 17, single, laborer from Orsie Belluno, going to Seymour, Iowa, to brother Francesco.

ALSO on this manifest around line 18
Angelo Faoro, 32, married, from Orsie Belluno, going to Seymour, Iowa, to cousin Paolo Dall'agnoletto.

Here is what could be Sebastiano's WWI REgistration Card and what is probably his 1920 Census though his first name was misspelled.

WWI Card
Shows his age as 30, his birth in "Belluno" Italy on March 10, 1887.
He was living in Williamson County, Illinois and working as a coal miner.

1920 Census
Name is recorded as "Pergentino" Faoro, 32, born in Italy, coal miner
Wife: Victoria, 23, born in France, parents born in Italy,
Son: Livio, 2, born in Illinois.
The family is living in Carlinville, Illinois (Macoupin County) and own their own home.

Are these your relatives?

Hello and thank you!

No I don't have the manifest, but I do have the passenger record for Sebastiano. as near as I can tell, this is the only Sebastiano to come through Ellis Island, on La Savoie, between 1900 and1908. I know that his destination was Spring Valley, Illinois. So this seems like my guy.

When I saw the passenger record via Ellis Island.org I thought it was Sebastiano's brother, but Antonio was older than Sebastiano. I assumed the records were switched, as the passenger numbers were #3 and #4.

Sebastiano's oral history said he came alone, with a neighbor lady, and Antonio was already here. Knowing the destination clears this up.

My Sebastiano and Antonio did not have a brother Francesco. The odds are looking pretty good that this is my Sebastiano, who's listed as being older than his actual 17 years of age, and younger than the oral history that says he arrived via La Savoie in 1900 and was 13/14 years old

The cousin in Spring Vally is a complete surprise!
Thank you so very much!

Again this looks like my guy! I can't thank you enough. Yes, My family lived in Williamson County Illinois, were indeed coal miners. My Sebastiano had blue eyes, light brown hair!

By the time I knew Pop, he was functionally illiterate, but this might have been his signature in 1917. Again thank you so much!

The manifest clearly states that the last residence was Arsiè (with an accent on the last e) Belluno.
There other Faoro in the same manifest, all coming from Arsiè

You may wish to write directly to the comune (town) to request records. The letter should be written in Italian. Here is a link to help with the process.

And another with form letters in Italian to make your request:

And this link for the comune of Arsie in Belluno Province.

Oh, my God! I knew 'Faoro' was a common name in Belluno, but being distantly related to a mayor is darn pretty cool.

Looking at the handwriting on the Manifest, the person's capital, script 'A' looks sort of like an 'O'. What is clearly, 'Belluno', in script could have been transcribed as 'Bellisno'.Whoever transcribed the manifest into passenger records for Ellis Island.org made a very honest mistake :D

Thank you both for your help!
