What do you think the first letter is in this name?

Post by aliza24 »

Hi Gang-

I'm trying to figure out the name on a ship manifest.

His name is transcribed as Edwardo Tanucci but I'm not sure if that first letter is really a "T".

Date on manifest: April 27, 1907
Naples to NY

What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance for the help!

There are 13 Tanucci listed in the ellisisland.org website so the surname sounds correct. =Peter=

Took a look, and it is Tanucci :-)

If you look at the bottom of the column for occupations you will see the same script for Tailor...

Tanucci is listed in the Italian surname dictionary as an alteration of the base surname TANI which shows up in 1260 as TANUS. This should clinch it for you. =Peter

Good catch Tessa! I was looking for comparisons but didn't look at the occupations.

Thanks!

LOL. Sorry Peter- didn't mean to leave you out. :)
Thank you for your replies.

It's just that I know Tanucci is a name- but I needed to know if it was the name on this particular record. Just because the name exists it doesn't mean that it was this guy's name, ya know?

And since I don't see any Tanucci's in the town records of where he's from- I have to wonder if it's right. I found his wife but not him- and they both say they were born in the same town. It's a bit of a mystery.

I'm hoping that when the marriage films come in, that will solve it.

Yes, I do very much appreciate all of the replies, please don't get me wrong.

I'm just trying to solve this darned mystery and it's driving me nuts. Every time I turn around this guy's name changes so he's a tough one to nail down.

Here is the manifest. I agree it is a T. look at #20 also. The name Tanucci appears in Puglia, but so do Sanucci, Ranucci, Panucci and Danucci.

Thanks everybody for all of your help!

I think it's back to the drawing board. I'm going to see if I can gather any more clues and wait for the marriage films to come in.

That seems like my best bet because I've already been through the birth recs for his town 3 times and no luck on his record. But I know his wife was from there- I have her birth rec. Given that they usually married in the bride's town, their marriage rec will hopefully be there.

Just out of curiosity, which Rodi are you looking in?

To my knowledge, there is no comune in Italy named simply "Rodi." Instead, there are Comune di Rodi Garganico, Provincia di Foggia, Regione di Puglia (Southern Italy) and Comune di Rodi Milici, Provincia di Messina, Regione di Sicilia (Insular Italy).

Perhaps you are looking in the wrong comune? The manifest, as you probably know, says just "Rodi".

It's Rodi Garganico. And that's where his wife's record was found too so I know I'm in the right place. But he is a trickier because, as I said, his name keeps changing in the records- first and last name.

I'm going to see if anything turns up when the marriage recs come in. If that doesn't work then I may have to do a separate post to see if I can solve this thing.

It is almost certainly meaningless, but I'm going to toss this tidbit into the ring:

Eduardo is also listed on the "Record of Detained Aliens" for his 1907 manifest. That page is typed, not handwritten, and it clearly says "Tamucci" with an "m", not "n".

Tamucci exists in small numbers in Italy today.

Thanks Carmine. Since that one is typed, I wonder if it was just a typo? Who the heck knows! You wouldn't believe how many name variations I've found for this guy- I'm starting to lose count! :)

I've been doing this a while and I've seen my fair share of name changes but this guy might take the cake! I guess I'll have to just be patient and wait for the other films to come in to see what comes up.
