What is this occupation?

Post by aliza24 »

Hi guys,

I'm looking at a record and the occupation looks like it says "foresa" or "foreza". I've never seen this as an occupation and it's not on any of the lists that I've checked so far.

Anyone ever heard of this profession?

Are you sure there is an "o" in the word? Without the "o," it would be fresa, which would have to do with a mill. Can you upload the image of the word in the document?

Other possibilities if it starts with an "f"

ferraio/ferraro - blacksmith
fornaio - baker
funaio - rope maker

There are about the same length as the one you described.

could the second letter be an a and not an o? I see an Italian on an Italian search engine referred to as Il farese, but I can't find a definition of the word.

I'm thinking we're back to that "mystery" occupation from a month ago...

Remember "faenzari"? The makers of Faenze Pottery?

What do you think? would be nice to see the document...:-)

I tried uploading the darned thing and it said it was still too big. I can't figure out how to size it down anymore.

It definitely looks like an "o". Foreza or foresa. ?

"Foresta" is variously given as forest or rain forest.

Perhaps it is a variant of that word? A woodsman?

This thread ( http://italiangenealogy.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=17142/ ) contains a discussion of how to upload large image files for viewing on this site.

Hi There,

Here is a site that has a few suggestions of occupations with the English translation.

Well...it looks like what you said "foresa"

AND everyone on the page you uploaded has the same occupation... :-?
the groom, the groom's father and the bride's father....

Canna is in Calabria... (just hinking out loud)...
Very small population today (only 339 families)...

Maybe it relates to forest as Carmine said... Can't image there are that many who would be "bakers" LOL.

...to which I add my suggestion that he may very well worked in a foundry (making bricks or clayware) as a FORNIARO

If you look closely there is a dot over the "I" and the elongated S relates to the word below and not the occupation. =Peter=

Thanks so much everybody for the responses!!

Suanj- I don't think I've seen 'foresa' being used for countryman before. It's not on any of the other records I've seen from this town either.

Do you think this is a term specific to the area? (Calabria)

it is a term of south Italy; Forese( as a well Foresi) is also a surname... with same meaning.... in this webpage http://www.sanmarcoargentano.it/ottocen ... /tuoto.htm
San Marco Argentano ( Calabria), abt people's professions in 1800s, you can read:
"Svolgevano tutti attività agricole come bracciali , foresi o contadini."
