Italy trip
I am taking a trip to Italy Sept. 28,2010. I want to go to Medachino. This is were my father was born in 1908. His name is Dominic Santo Greco, his father's name is Antonio Greco and his mother's name is Rosina Naccarato. Is there anyway I can find any of his family still living there?

Re: Italy trip
We are going to have to begin with just where exactly you are going since I don't see any place named Medachino in Italy today.
Possibly Medicina in the province of Bologna?
Once we resolve this issue, you can try using the Italian telephone directory to locate possible relatives in your ancestral comune. See http://www.paginebianche.it/index_en.html

There are 124 Greco in mendicino...go to www.paginebianche.it and put in Greco on left and Mendicino on right and clikck trova. Frist names runin families so select those with familiar first names as potential relatives to write to. Let us know if you want to write to them in Italian.

Re: Italy trip
These are the three most likely possibilities:
Comune di Medicina, Provincia di Bologna, Regione di Emilia-Romagna (Northeastern Italy) See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medicina
Comune di Mendicino, Provincia di Cosenza, Regione di Calabria (Southern Italy) See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mendicino
Frazione Medicina, Comune di Pescia, Provincia di Pistoia, Regione di Toscana (Central Italy) See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pescia
Note in each case, the Italian "ci" is pronounced like the "chee" in cheese. Also, in most cases, the Italians accent the next-to-last syllable. So:
May - dee - CHEE -na
Main - dee - CHEE- no
Frazione = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frazione

Yes, but possibly the original poster has additional information he did not tell us. Luckily, the three possible locations are in northeast, central, and southern Italy.PeterTimber wrote:carmine go with the numbers. =Peter=
Admitedly however, Mendicino is the one comune which has significant numbers of both Greco and Naccarato telephone listings. http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... btt=1&om=0
To our poster: The state archives of Cosenza has a website at which you can search vital records for the 1800 - 1900 period. Go to http://88.59.143.158/ascs_web/index.faces and complete the free registration process. Then login to the site and have fun.
Lots of Naccarato's and Greco's listed there, although none specifically for Mendecino.

Re: Italy trip
Mendicino is small enough that many or all of the persons sharing your surnames currently living there may be your relatives. As I said in an earlier post: Mendicino is the one comune which has significant numbers of both Greco and Naccarato telephone listings. http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... btt=1&om=0frankgreco56 wrote:Hi, That is my family tree. ..l...and further when you walk down the street in the town you will see all your aunts, uncles and relatives since the genes in your family from that town have been there for thousand or more years and facial features will show this. =Peter=

Re: Italy trip
Hi Frank,
I've just returned from Italy on the same sort of mission as you're contemplating. What I did was to take my family tree with me, with as much info as I had, and then walk into the civil records office and start asking questions. The clerk disappeared into the basement and returned with a giant Stato della Famiglia ledger book, and he found my grandfather and other family members living in the same house. The town policeman was standing nearby, and he caught up with me later and introduced me to a relative. And after a day or two, I had people approaching me in the street. Also, the parish priest was helpful. So just go, Frank. You'll meet family, and it'll be wonderful.
Best,
Jerry
