Great-Great-Grandparent Immigration Info and Italian names!!

Post by michellekp »

I am trying to find out my Great-Great-Grandfather's surname when he arrived in the US.

I found my Great-Grandfathers SSN application form. It states his father's name as Gennaro Phillips, and his mother's name as Mary (maiden name unknown).

I have been told that Gennaro came from the region of Calabria close to the city Cosenza. The town he was from was possibly San Fili. The woman he married was from the same town, and that her maiden name was the same as Gennaro's family name.

They had at least 9 children I know of:

Jim (or James): possibly born on Ellis Island (my grandmother told me this)

Bill

Al:

Rose:

Theresa:

Diane/Diana

Carmen: married a woman called Catherine Mastrianni

Richard: the youngest born in June 4 1904 (as written on his SSN application). He also attended Senn High School in Chicago.
had 2 children: Phillipa Judith Phillips (now Judith P. Johnson Emerson)
Richard J. Phillips 2

The sons were mainly in the produce business. I know that Richard Phillips worked for a M. J. Ardito & Co. in Chicago (from SSN application form)

I have been talking to my grandmother. She told me that in addition Gennero had 3 sets of twins who died young. She also told me Gennaro had been in the US before he immigrated because he had been travelling on a boat and had been all over the place. But I am not sure how accurate this is since she is not sure of where or when her father (Richard) was born. She also mentioned that her father was baptized since he was raised Catholic.

I have ordered a birth certificate for Richard Phillips, to see if Gennaro and his wife's names are on it. I figured that would be the most accurate document since Gennaro or his wife had to have filled it out. If their names are on it, I'll know the mother's maiden name which would give me Gennaro's surname before it was changed to Phillips

My problem is that the people I've talked to aren't very sure of the information they've given me. My grandmother is convinced that her father's birthdate was June 9 1904, while on her father's SSN application that he himself had applied for states his birthdate as June 4 1904. We also are not sure of the Italian surname whether it was Filipi, Filippi, Fillipi, Fillippi, Filipo, Filippo, Fillipo, Fillippo.

So if anyone knows anything let me know!!

I Valarie, thanks, already checking all records... the database is no complete, but I am a bit positive that Gennaro FILIPPO coming from
San Lucido and not San Fili ... the FILIPPO calabrians in Chicago coming from San Lucido...
here someone:
FILIPPO, ANTONIO 1/13/1896 SAN LUCIDO ITALY LABORER
FILIPPO, EMELIO 8/1/1892 SAN LUCIDO ITALY LABORER
FILIPPO, TONY 3/16/1889 SAN LUCIDO ITALY LABORER
FILIPPO, VINCENZO 11/12/1889 SAINT LUCIDO ITALY MACHINIST HELPER

so it very possible that also Gennaro coming from same area...
hugs,

There is also an obit for Gennaro on Ancestry. I'm not sure how to copy it.

He died Sept 24, 1934 and left children: James, Theresa, Charles, William, Ulysess, Rosina, Carrie and Richard.

Ciao suanj, how are you? :D

It is from the Sept.25, 1934 Chicago Tribune. Does not mention a wife or birthplace, but gives Our Lady of Pompeii Church and Mt. Carmel cemetery.

I also found this on Castle garden, but can't find the manifest on Ancestry.
I wish Castle garden could link the manifests. :?
Do you think this could be the right family?
