Castagna, Italy

Post by cvwalters »

I am wondering if any one knows if Castagna, Italy is/was an actual place in the Calabria region. It is the location of my great grandather's birth. I believe it may be or have been in the Province of Catanzaro. Anytime I have tried to research it I have come up empty.

I don't know much about my ggf side of the family, so as always any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

Castagna, comune of Carlopoli - province: Catanzaro - region: Calabria

Here is some info.

Thank you!

I am sure it is Calabria. All of his records show him being born in Castagna. His draft registration for WWI lists Castagna, Catanzaro.

Here is my ggf info.

Santo Graziano
b. 11.1.1888 in Castagna, Italy
a. 4.17.1903, NYC, settled in Utica, NY
m. Maria Coriale in Utica, NY 1909
d. 7.12.1958

His parents were Francesco Graziano and Maria Sacco. I know nothing about them. According to family folklure, Santo's parents died when is was young, possibly in a fire.

He has at least two sisters. One I have info on is Maria Carmella. She too settled in Italy.
b. 11.29.1876
a. 1902
m. Fillipo Defazio in Castagna italy.

The other sister may have lived in Rochester, NY. I now her married name is Oliver.

The only other info I have is Santo traveled with a cousin named Raffalle Graziano.

I will tell you I have Census records and manifest for Santo.

Any other information that you might be able to help with would be greatly appreciated. I am hoping to be able to trace this branch of the family tree as far as possible.

The only other

Sorry Mj I just saw your post about the manifest. I will confirm that is the correct manifest for Santo. Thanks Tessa!

Here is Carmella's (Santo's sister's) manifest. She is last on the page.

Couldn't find the manifest on Ellis Island because the names are really mangled. If for any reason you need to access from Ellis Island Santo's name is spelled GRAFIANO and Raffaele's is GRAZIDNO.

A couple of interesting things that you may have already noted. There is a 15 year age difference between the brothers and Raffaele was going to a cousin and Santo to his brother in law.( they lived next door to each other.)

Wow! Thanks everyone!

So I didn't realize that Rafalle was his brother and not his cousin. For some reason, probably because I saw the word "cousin" and they weren't going to the same house I didn't make the connection.

So know that you all have connected the dots for me! As I understand it, Santo or Sam's parents died in a fire when he was young. So my theory is Rafalle must have gone back to get Santo to bring him back his siblings. Also I believe Rafalle went to Canada later on.

Jim - I do Santo's obit. The Fulton website is a favorited of mine. I have gotten a lot of good information from it. Thank you as wall.

Thanks to everyone for all your help and pointing out the Graziano's are brothers!

Christine
Tessa - I do have the 1920 Census, it must connected to my tree. Like you said, it was hard to find. Thank you for the address and the info to send a letter to Castagna.

Hi Christine!
I am originally from Utica, and my mother's parents were born in Castagna! Their names were Cardamone & Sacco.
I am also sending you a message via private message. I am in touch with some castagnesi (past and present) via email and Facebook, and know someone who is researching the Graziano and Sacco families too. There were several Graziano families, also Sacco families but I have researched my Saccos into the 1700s and most Saccos in Castagna descend from one landowning family.
Yes, Castagna is a hamlet (or frazione) in the comune of Carlopoli, Catanzaro province, in Calabria, Italy. It is in the Sila Piccola mountains. It used to be an independent comune but lost its independent status around 1868? due to an increase in brigandage.
Anyway, we are probably distant cousins! Several people have been researching on Castagna, so you might not have to reinvent the wheel!
All best,
Jon
