Filippo Pandiscia in Lacedonia

Post by paulag »

My great, great uncle, Filippo Pandiscia, is listed on a WWI memorial in Lacedonia. I luckily found a photograph of the memorial on the website www.italiansofmontclair.com under 'Documents.' He was born in 1880, and he lived in Lacedonia. He came to the US in 1902. I believe that he went back to Italy to fight with the Italian army during the war.

I am interested in getting a copy of his death certificate and would like to know if he ever married. I would appreciate any help that you can offer. Thank you very much.

My grandfather was Guiseppe Pandiscia of Lacedonia who is also on the memorial and lived in Montclair. I think Filippo and he were brothers. It appears that many records in lacedonia were destroyed by a volcano. The best information I could find was on Ellis Island and the spelling of the names are very distorted and because most were unable to speak English, the recording of the names are difficult to locate. Our family name was changed to Pondish in Montclair in 1907 - so look for name change to locate your info. good luck

Filippo Pandiscia entered the USA in 1907 at NYC at age 40 and married coming from Lacedonia. Perhaps if you check the manifest you can ascertainif this is your Filippo since there does not appear to be any other Filippo entering at NYC. =Peter=

Do you know if Filippo's father's name was Giuseppe? I found this record on this site:

http://www.cadutigrandeguerra.it/

PANDISCIA FILIPPO di GIUSEPPE (Filippo son of Giuseppe)
Soldato 16° reggimento fanteria, nato il 31 agosto 1879 a Lacedonia, distretto militare di Avellino, morto il 30 dicembre 1918 a Zara per malattia

Cynthia, is this record pertaining your grandfather?

PANDISCIA GIUSEPPE di TOMMASO (Giuseppe son of Tommaso)
Soldato 143° Reggimento fanteria, nato il 23 marzo 1898 a Lacedonia, distretto militare di Avellino, morto il 21 agosto 1917 sul Carso per ferite riportate in combattimento.

I do not know. Guiseppe was married to Antoinetta Merchant(e).She came over several years later. I do know that Guiseppe came over with a son and several years later once Antoinetta was in the USA with some other children born in Italy (James and one another one I just had a brain freeze on), the one son that came over with Guiseppe was ill and I heard was sent back to Italy to live with the nuns,

My father had several sisters, Teresa, Maria and Rose(bud) or Rosa. I know my grandfather Guiseppe "Pondiscio (named was changed) and he is buried in a cemetary in Bloomfield on the Nutley, NJ border. Antoinette(a) and a younger daughter are buried at Mt.Hebron Cemetary in Upper Montclair, NJ in the Non Catholic section.

It could very well be that Filippio was my uncle. I never knew I was half Italian until I was 50 yrs old. It was a secret that was kept by our entire family. Not one of my aunts or uncles married an Italian and no one was Catholic, I never heard any of them speak Italian. When I was little, I asked my Dad what language my grandma spoke and he lied and told me French. She died when I was 5. I do have a file on what I have found and can give you information i have

Cynthia, the persons listed on the memorial plaque lost their lifes in the first world war:

I thought that your grandfather came back to Italy to fight in the war and died....
So, the Giuseppe Pandiscia listed in the memorial is not your grandfather...
I apologize.
