Francesco Manno/Mano & Gaetana DiGiovanna

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Francesco Manno/Mano & Gaetana DiGiovanna

Post by Melona75 »

Researching my Sicilian roots but having hard time with my Grandmother's paternal side. Here's what I have..
Francesco Manno & Gaetana DiGiovanna married in New Orleans March 25,1894. They had 5 kids born in New Orleans and by the time my grandmothers father was born the last name was spelled Mano. So I don't know why the change from Manno to Mano happened. Was it error? Either way Mano stuck.
I'm trying to locate when Francesco and gaetana entered the US. I'm told she was a child and came to New Orleans but I don't have her DOB or any other details on her except she had 2 brothers, 1 in Tampa (John or Joe) other in Chicago(John or Joe).
Francesco came through New Orleans too but I have no details other than that. I do know he was a bit older than his wife Gaetana and died when the children were young. He died in Bolton,Miss.
ANY and All help would be so great!
Also we know they came from Sicily but are just assuming Contessa Entellina like the other half of the family BUT could be wrong.

Laura-
WOW! You nailed it! All the names and dates match. Obviously the last name as Mans is wrong but this info is for my family! Gaetana was called Annie.
Hopefully with this info I can track back the family line before they came to US.
If you have any research suggestions please let me know.
And thanks again-Melona

Francesco came through New Orleans too but I have no details other than that.
Hae you noticed that he stated that he arrived in the U.S. on 1880? I believe it can be the correct year more or less.... He was a shoemaker (occupation from 1900 census)... thanks to member Valarie :D (vj) I'm posting for you this newspaper article:

April 23, 1882

Lots of great info! I am FLOORED to see the newspaper article from 1886. My grandmother was speechless.
I'm doing all the research for her. She hasn't ever had many details on her fathers family history.

Still trying to find the records of immigration for
Gaetana DiGiovanna and Francesco Mano/Manno
Even with dates from census not finding any matches.
Thx for all your help Laura
