Zanatta

Post by Craig »

Interesting, my mother's maiden name is Zanette. Her parents came from Pinidello which is near Cordignano in Treviso/Veneto region.

I wonder if there is any common origin of the 2 surnames, or is it just spelling differences between possible dialects from region to region.

Both Zanette and Zanatta are alterations and derivations of the base surname ZANNI which appears in the Italian surname Dictionary. Thus your guess is correct in that they are along many mnay many other surnames derived from Zanni. Peter

Hi: the surnames Zanatta or Zanette, is specific of Treviso area(Veneto region), and derives from Veneto's dialectal word "Zan", that it means in Italian language "Gianni", diminutive of first name Giovanni..

I recommend that you check your local library or bookstore for a copy of "Italian Genealogical Records" by Trafford Cole. This excellent book covers all the fundamentals for researching family history in Italy, especially for those who must do research via correspondence.

Here are some addresses for you.

For vital records from September 1871 and later:

Ufficio di Stato Civile
Comune di Paese
Via Senatore Pellegrini, 4
31038 Paese (TV)
Italy

For earlier vital records:

Parrocchia Assunzione della Beata Vergine Maria
Via Baracca Francesco, 3
31040 Porcellengo (TV)
Italy

For military records and Napoleonic-era vital records (1806-1815):

Archivio di Stato di Treviso
Via A. Marchesan 11a
31100 Treviso
Italy

Good luck with your research,
Regina

When corresponding for documents it is bst to write in Italian or use form letters such as you find in www.circolocalabrese.org under research and you might also wish to enclose a self addressed envelope with a postal coupon equivalent to $5.EURO. Peter

I am a Zanatta married into the family and am searching for birth certificates for my father in law and mother in law. They are from Veneto (Musano and Camelo). They migrated to Australia in the 70's. Im not sure what to do to find them as i signed up to ancestry.com and did a search but cannot find them and its very frustrating as i cannot type in italian.

I don't believe you'll find their records on ancestry (yet)
Most folks write directly to the comune or rent microfilm (if available) from their local Family History Center

I am a Zanette from the Treviso area on my paternal Grandfather's side. I have a family tree on Ancestry.com but my trail runs cold once I get to the relatives who never left Italy. Here is what I have found, any information would be appreciated!

Joseph Anthony (Guissepe Antonio) Zanette
Born 5 June 1879, San Fior, Italy
Died 17 Dec 1931 Pennsylvania, USA

Father was Anthony Zanette (LOOGING FOR INFORMATION)
Mother was Teresa Pinneza (Pinese), San Fior, Italy (LOOKING FOR INFORMATION)

Married Marie Louise (Luigia) Armeline
