Looking for Sam Bennett (supposedly Italian - Naturalized)

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Looking for Sam Bennett (supposedly Italian - Naturalized)

Post by dcbennett73 »

I have hit a thick brick wall in determining my GGrandfathers origins. His death cert, 1920 census state he was born in Louisiana. I can find no trace of him in LA. Per my aunt, she said he was Italian. On his WW1 draft card he said he was a "naturalized citizen." But he is pretty much a ghost. He claims a birthdate of 25 March 1883 and died 8 Jul 1942. I took his SSN and tried to get a copy of his original application, to see if his real name and his parents name. They said that SSN did not exist. I am wondering if he was Sicilian and migrated to New Orleans since he claims to be born in Longwood, Louisiana? Any ideas?

Thanks

Thank you so much. But are there any other avenues to search to see if he was born in Italy. His draft card says naturalized citizen and my grand father Charles Bennett also claims he was born in Italy.

have you requested the SSN?

from the death certificate:

Social Security Number: 529-14-6946

note that 529 is the State code for Utah...

Do you mean when looking at the Social Security Death Index online? Because if you did, then be aware that records for persons who died before 1962 are not there; you must instead contact the Social Security Administration directly.
The SSDI does not include death records for everyone who has been issued a Social Security Number (card). Common reasons for exclusion include the following:

The death was not reported to the Social Security Administration (SSA).

The death occurred before the Death Master File was maintained in a computer database. About 98 percent of the deaths in this database occurred between 1962 and the present.

The person did not participate in the Social Security program.

Survivor death benefits were (are) being paid to dependents or spouse.

A recent death may not be indexed yet.

Human error. (Before you give up, read the section titled "Missing Entries in the SSDI.")

dcbennett73, by your genealogic tree on ancestry.com the wife of Sam Bennett was:

Marie Beatty
Birth Sep 1894
in Colorado;

Parents
P. L. Beatty
1845-

Magdalene Herling
1869-1938

data by 1900 census:
1900 United States Federal Census about Marie Beaty
Name: Marie Beaty
[Maried Beaty]
Home in 1900: Trinidad, Las Animas, Colorado
Age: 5
Birth Date: Sep 1894
Birthplace: Colorado
Race: White
Gender: Female
Relationship to Head of House: Daughter
Father's Birthplace: New York
Mother's Name: Ellen Beaty
Mother's Birthplace: Wisconsin

Occupation: View on Image

Neighbors: View others on page

Household Members: Name Age
Ellen Beaty
38
Theodore Beaty

Joseph Poitre

I found the 1910 census:

1910 United States Federal Census about Marie Beatty
Name: Marie Beatty
[Maria Beatty]
Age in 1910: 15
Estimated birth year: abt 1895
Birthplace: Colorado

Mother's Birth Place: Missouri
Home in 1910: Trinidad Ward 2, Las Animas, Colorado
Marital Status: Single
Race: White

Household Members: Name Age
Theodore Herrling
53
Frances Herrling
37
Amy Herrling
25
Marie Beatty
15
niece
Sherman Beatty
12 nephew (born in Colorado)

I believe that is the same Marie Beatty of 1900 census... it is possible? It is possible that Marie Beattry married at Sam Bennett in Trinidad, Las Animas, CO and after moved in Pueblo??? The first daughter, Frances Bennett, was born in 1916, so it is possible that Sam and Marie married around the 1915... maybe by marriage certificate could be possible to find more infos abt Sam Bennett... what you think? I understand that the birthplace is not Colorado but New York, but seeming the same person to me...
