Problems making Italian accents on my computer
Problems making Italian accents on my computer
Hi Guys-
I wasn't sure where to put this post but I guess this will do. I haven't done a lot of Italian typing in a while and I have a different computer (with Vista- ugh!) since I last did.
I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not- but for some reason I can't make the accent marks. I googled it and found some places that had a numeric code you could put in to make it. I tried that and nothing happened!
I see other people on google with the same problems.
Any other suggestions? I need the accent that's above the tab key (bottom) to go above the letter 'A.'
Grazie!

Re: Problems making Italian accents on my computer
Desktop or notebook/laptop PC? It's a bit tougher on a notebook...
Hold down one of the two "Alt" keys and then type the four digit number using the numeric keypad, not the top row of number keys
Alt+0224 = Ã
Alt+0232 = è
Alt+0233 = é
Alt+0242 = ò
Alt+0243 = ó
Alt+0236 = ì
Alt+0249 = ù
On a notebook, you also need to hold down the Function key (usually labelled "Fn") and then use the embedded numeric keypad (look at the y-u-i-o keys and nearby).

Great! I was sort of curious, too. The a with a grave accent doesn't work, for me, though. It just goes back to the last pagejohnnyonthespot wrote:Desktop or notebook/laptop PC? It's a bit tougher on a notebook...

Squigy- you lost me there. Embedded numeric keypad?
Dear Lord! Isn't there an easier way? I'm on a laptop and I have Vista, if that matters.
Thanks for the patience!

PS- I need to write the first letter you have up there.
Re: Problems making Italian accents on my computer
Oh, no, it was Carmine who wrote that ! I was just thanking him as it was helpful to me, too.aliza24 wrote:Squigy- you lost me there. Embedded numeric keypad?

OK, let me explain, though.aliza24 wrote:Squigy- you lost me there. Embedded numeric keypad?

The embedded numeric keypad, is apparently the letters (for my laptop) U-I-O-J-K-L-M. It basically means, when you hold down the FN button (located on the far left) those letters become numbers.
If you have a numeric keypad, it should look like this, and that is what you have to use to make the letters have accents or whatever:

Carmine could probably give you a better explanation

Re: Problems making Italian accents on my computer
You can always just put a little comma above the letter. Its not quite the same but they get the concept. You know the comma we use when writing a contraction? Like in can't
Re: Problems making Italian accents on my computer
Yeah, I read that people do that. How do you tell if the accent is grave or acute, though?DeFilippis78 wrote:You can always just put a little comma above the letter. Its not quite the same but they get the concept. You know the comma we use when writing a contraction? Like in can't

You mean open or closed?
Re: Problems making Italian accents on my computer
The comma, as you put it (apostrophe) slants to the right. The accent grave leans to the left. They are different. You can see the examples above.
Plus, if you just use an apostrophe it doesn't go above the letter it goes after.

I suppose so.DeFilippis78 wrote:You mean open or closed?

Ã
Now acute:
á

Re: Problems making Italian accents on my computer
Well with my "comma" suggestion you cant tell but I guess the context of the sentence would tell the reader what you mean. Carmines way is best but in a hurry the comma could work. Livio can chime in on this one!
Re: Problems making Italian accents on my computer
Squigy- sorry I got your two comments mixed it. And thanks for explaining. I found the numbers you were talking about on the keys but it still doesn't work. Mamma mia!
So if I got you right- you're supposed to hold down the Function key, type in the numbers (from keyboard, not above), then you type the letter you want the accent on ?
Is that right?
