Info on my grandfather

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Info on my grandfather

Post by Faina »

I am carrying out a research on my great-grandfather Domenico Onofri (Dominick as other spelling) who emigrated in USA from Italy in 1920. He lived in Grand Rapids (Michigan) and died in 1956. When he arrived in USA his sponsor was Antonio (Anthony) Romani.
I found a reference to his naturalization in 1949 and I am waiting a copy of his C-File from USCIS.
After his naturalization he obtained a US passport and came back several times to Italy before his death.
When he left Italy he was married with my great-grandmother who never emigrated in USA.
After about 15-20 years in US he obtained the divorce and remarried a US native woman. He was not yet a US citizen. This is singular in his story.
How was it possible for hin to obtain the divorce? he was not a US citizen and at that time in Italy the divorce was not allowed.
His petition reported a date for his second marriage in Grand Rapids (on March 18, 1940) but it seems that his name do not results in the marriage index of this city.
After his second marriage he adopted a daughter. I know the name of her natural father. Is it possible to obtain more information about this adoption?
Furthermore, I think he obtained the US passport between 1949-1950. How can I obtain a copy of his passport application?
I am looking for some suggestions to carry on my research.

Thank you for your help.

I think he declared to 1930 census officer to be married with Viola, but probably this was not true. After this census I try to find information about Viola, but without her maiden name nothings emerged.

He filed a first petition to become us citizen in 1929 stated he was married with Assunta who lived in Italy.
In 1944 he filed a second petition (it seem that he obtained th naturalization in 1935 but the certificate was cancelled in 1936) and in this petition he declared to be married with Mary (Winifred) Elmer and that the marriage took place in Grand Rapids on March 18, 1940. After this petition he was naturalized on 1949.

Is it possible he declared in this petition but indeed he never married? Was there no a legal control on the information provided in the petitions?

The first time he arrived in USA was in 1911 as you found, after he came back to Italy for the WWI and returned in USA in 1920.

Have you found any information about Antonio Romani?

faina I believe you italian, if you wish we can speak in italian...
In the arrival of 1911 it are on ship's manifest the markings abt naturalization( in the first page of ship's manifest) and it match with what you say in your reply...
I cannot find your ancestor in WWII draft registration card database and this is strange... I made a deep search this morning but no helpful....
I believe that the union with Viola not continued for much time and for that he married with the other woman... married or just living as spouses...
as far I know in the petition it are essentially checked the arrival and politic issue, the job.. etc... if he married in other State,( for exemple: Nevada), no many requirements, just only own honor word....
what is strange, it is that the first petition in 1929 failed, the second crossed, and finally naturalized in 1949... that let me thing that he had some problem...
you can insert the last naturalization?

Grazie dell'aiuto Suanj.
See no. 4241 Cr and no. 2757 Eg).

riguardo a:

Saprebbe aiutarmi in qualche modo? Magari dei contatti.
Grazie infinite
