What's the Furthest You've Gone Back

Post by ForzaItaliaPgh »

Ciao tutti,

Just out of curiosity, what is the furthest some of you have traced your line back? I've read that surnames in Italy started in the 1300's and harbor hopes that I'll be able to trace my folks back that far, but realize 1500's might be more realistic. Has anyone gotten back that far or know of someone who has?

To the 1730s on my maternal IOB line (due to the 1802 destruction in a fire of most records from Cunevo), but have had more success on some minor lines --- to the late 1300s on PANCHERI due to a researcher having abstracted records from church and archival documents; early 1500s on CHINI due to someone in the CHINI family researching actual archives and church records on site and then publishing a book with the genealogical findings. Availability of FHC films for Trentino has been terrific -- some villages have been filmed to the 1500s. Most records from the 1600s and late 1500s are in Latin. Earlier records though have to be onsite at the archives and you need not only a lot of time, but knowledge of Old German writing since the area was under Austro-Hungarian control over the centuries.
Researching Iob (Job, Yob), Dalpiaz, Zanon in villages of Cunevo and Flavon (Trentino) and Romano in Spadafora (Sicily).

Awesome. I am hoping to have some of the success you've had. I've always thought it would be great to trace the line back to the first person who bared our last name. I guess I'd have to get back one generation beyond that to prove he was the first, but it would make a great wall chart!

Currently we have traced the Piazza Family clan from Vallelunga Pratameno, Caltanisetta, Sicily, Italy to the year 1758. That may not seem like very far back but given that I started my research in August of this year I think it is very productive.

Of course I could not have done much of this without the help of the individuals that assist on this site. There are a couple great researchers out there that are willing to lend a hand and point you in the right direction.

All the best

Yes sometimes it is confusing some of the information that they send and you have to piecemeal your research but I have found the experience so far a great hobby. I am hoping to get more information on one of the branches of the family that I believe ties everything together but I haven't gotten a reply thus far today.

Well don't give up your search. Have you tried the Family History Library in your area? I know some people are put off with the Mormons, hell I am one of those, but they have resources that you cannot believe and once I receive information from a researcher in Italy I always confirm the information on microfilm tapes that I order from Salt Lake. I mean I am here in Orlando and I usually have a requested tape within a week. Great service so you might what to try them.

The comunes Im interested in were never put on film. That makes it even more difficult.

What communes are you looking at? Have you tried these sites.

http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwisdom/index.html
http://www.gentedimaregenealogy.com/index.php
http://www.sicilianfamilytree.com/

I use these sites a bit if I cannot find anything here. A couple of them you will have to be able to translate some of the information that you get back but google translate works pretty damn good.

Hey I will try to give you a hand while I am doing my research. If you want to share with me the names that you are looking for I will make sure that they go into my search database and will keep an eye out for them.

Good to talk to you and good luck. Oh and don't give up.

The Registri dello Stato Civile of Vasto (Chieti), 1809-1900, has been microfilmed by the LDS. Go to www.familysearch.org, then Library>LibraryCatalog>Place Search and type in Vasto to see the film details.

Stella Cilento was known as Porcili until 1871. However, there appears to be no filmed records under either name. If the town of Stella Cilento tells you that they don't have records, you might want to try the provincial archives.

In my own (Dutch) genealogy I went back to about 1230 (no fantasy, no maybe, no perhaps, no probably, but all documentated). The oldest document I have found was from 30 april 1300 in which my ancestor Jan, his father Heyman and his grandfather Heyman made peace with some other landlord). I put it all, included the documents on this website:http://www.benvanrijswijk.com
When I moved to Italy three years ago I started with my wifes family. I went back untill 1610 for her fathers line http://www.benvanrijswijk.com/pitasi/.
I noticed that in Holland they have conservated their history much better than in Italy. Yet in the 17th century in Holland medieval documents were printed and feudal registers were copied. Here in southern Italy the churchregisters are mostly still conserved in the parishes where they sometimes litterally are rotting away in wet rooms. And when I ask in the archives for feudal records they look at me like I came from Mars.
Also the digitilizing is way back and nobody seems to care. In Holland the whole civil state from 1814 till 1930 is online: http://www.genlias.nl/ (also in English) and many archives have the churchregisters digitalized. Also notarial acts are being digitalized and one can search through them on the web for example: http://www.gemeentearchief.rotterdam.nl ... &Itemid=61
(also in English)
Here where I am in Italy (Calabria) everything has to start yet. I am making a small step on http://www.benvanrijswijk.com/fontigenealogiche.htm hoping that it is usefull for someone
