Gorassi surname/genealogy

Hello,

I am trying to search my maternal grandfather's line. I do not have a great deal of information, unfortunately.

To the best of my searching/knowledge, my grandfather, Rocco Anthony Gorassi was born in Canada, to Angelo Gorassi and Giovanna Maria Cerigliana/Cerigliani/Ciriliani/Ceriglianora, July 5, 1911. His siblings were Concetta (b 1902?), Maria (b 1906), Louis (b 1907?), Antonio (b 1913) and Lucy (b 1915).

Angelo is born sometime about 1868, married in Canada around 1900, died in Canada, 1916. Antonio had a brother, Antonio born 1866?, who did the traditional thing and married Giovanna Maria around 1918. There may have been another brother, possibly Gennaro? Angelo, Antonio and Gennaro are supposedly all sons of Lorenzo Gorassi and Concetta (surname unknown).

Giovanna Maria was born around 1880 in Laurenzana, Potenza, Basilicata, Italy. She died August 1 1965 in Toronto Ontario Canada. Her parents' names are Rocco Cerigliana/Cerigliani/Ceriliani/Ceriglianora and Mary Maetocchia?

My real trouble is, i cannot find any information at all on the Gorassi surname... it seems to almost to not exist any more. I am wondering if it is a corruption of Grossi or Grassi? I have even seen Gorase.

I am sorry, but I do not have a region or city of birth for Angelo, Antonio, Gennaro or Lorenzo Gorassi... other than it is somewhere in Italy to the best of my knowledge...

I know that makes it more difficult, but I do not have very much on this side of my family

I think that Giovanna Maria correct maiden name was Cirigliano, she was born on 17 april 1879 in Laurenzana and was the daughter of Cirigliano Rocco Vincenzo and Martoccia Donata Maria

It's just my thought but I noticed that in Laurenzana the lastname Galasso is present... maybe Gorassi was a mispelling?

Angelo GORRASI had also a sister, Gabriela GORRASI, married at Ricco; she made some trip, and in this second trip, with children: Anna and Angelo RICCO, left the father Luigi in Roccadaspide, joining at husband Luigi Ricco in Toronto, Canada:

Thank you all so much, that is some great info, and very helpful

As I said, my mother knew of Angelo, and Antonio. Actually, she always thought with her father being Rocco Anthony, and his brother being Antonio, that Antonio was the natural father, but I had found the records of Giovanna Maria marrying Angelo earlier, then Angelo's death record, then Antonio's marriage. I also know from my mother's memory about Connie's (though her husband's correct name is Cosimo Lattrulo). And Maria's marriage to Vincenzo (called Jimmy) Dinorcia. Connie died at about age 50, and after Vincenzo died, Cosimo married Maria.

My mother knew of a possible 3rd brother, but not for certain, and certainly not a 4th or of a sister. She was quite shocked when I mentioned it to her today.

Thank you also for the info on Roccadaspide. My mother always thought both her parents originated in Abbruzzo. Also of course, there has always been a question about the Gorassi spelling, though as I said, many people thought it had to be Grassi or Grossi.
