Family of Gionato Canali born in Noceto, Parma, Italy 1878

Post by ecanali »

I am seeking information on my great grandfather Gionato Canali who was born in Noceto, Parma, Italy in 1878. He arrived at Ellis Island, NY on Jan. 16, 1898 noting that he was joining an uncle living in Boston, MA.

He married Adalgisa/Adela Minardi in 1898 or 1899 and settled in Delawanna, NJ. Adalgisa was also born in Noceto, Parma on April 14, 1881 to Pietro Minardi and Carolina Merli (or possibly Merlino). I have traced most of their descendants.

They had 4 sons: Vittorio (1899 or 1900), twins Altriglio (or Attilio) and Jonathan (who died within a year) and Ernesto (1906).

I am seeking any information on Gionato's parents, siblings, and ancestry.

Hello and welcome :-)

Based on the 1910 Census for the children, can we assume that both parents were deceased?

Possible connection to the family?

1907 manifest for a "Nino Canali" from Parma, age 14, going to "adopted father Eugenio Furlatti (sp?) at 846 Second Ave., NYC
Leaving in Parma, his friend, Colestino Minardi

Name crossed off manifest - may or may not have sailed

You might want to try viewing the LDS films at the nearest Family History Center. They have available to rent, microfilms of civil records for Noceto, Parma, from 1866 - 1910, including birth, marriage and death.

Hi Tessa :D

I noticed that Adalgisa stated she was in the U.S. before...
Perhaps this is her first arrival in the U.S.:

16 January 1898:

Minardi Delasia, age 16, single, from Noceto to Brooklyn to join her father.

Possible her correct first name was Adelasia, I noticed this first name on her sons's 1907 arrival manifest page 2 that you found:

Hi Laura :-D

Great find!

Yes, that looks like her, with the difference that she is single on your manifest, and married on the later one.
Possible her correct first name was Adelasia
I agree :-)

Tessa and Laura
Thank you for the research and advice.

I have found no link to a Nino Canali.

As for the other findings, I have complete knowledge of Adalgisa Minardi and her descendants. Yes, she originally came to US at age 16, married Gionato here (they both arrived on same boat), had 2 sons who she brought to her parents in Italy in 1902 after one of the twin sons had died; she returned to US in 1902. The 2 sons returned with their uncle Cesare Minardi in 1907. Her 3 sons (which included my grandfather) lived in an orphange for about 15 months since their father was under long term medical care in Morris Plains, NJ and their mother needed to work to pay for his care as well as the sons' care at the orphange. They returned to their mother shortly after Gionato died in 1910. All of this I found via Ancestry.com, Genealogy.com, Ellisisland.org, and local census records.

I have also researched through the FHC and searched some church records, but have not been able to find Gionato's birth.

Thank you for the address for the birth record. This is definitely my next step.

I only have information on Gionato since arriving at Ellis Island. My research is focusing on verifying date and location of his birth, and any information on his siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles, etc. Per Passenger Manifest unpon his arrival in 1898, he stated that he was joining an uncle in Boston, MA. I found a Canali living in Boston, MA who arrived earlier than him, and also was born in Noceto, however, I have not been able to link him to Gionato.

Any other thoughts, recommendations, or findings are greatly appreciated.

If I can suggest just one thing: the name Gionato sounds very odd to me and since I live quite near to Noceto I can say it is not a common name in there. Possibly it's a typo for Gionata (which is the equivalent of Jonathan, while I never heard of a Gionato).
Cheers,
Flo

Flo,

Thanks for the correction. He did go by the name Jonathan in the US. I will re-submit my searches with Gionata.

Since you are near Noceto, I would like to learn about the property where he lived. Do you know if I should write to the same office as vital records:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Piazzale Adami, 1
43015 Noceto (PR)
ITALY

I appreciate your assistance. Thanks again.

I think that for land and real estates the right office is the Catasto.
And for Noceto:
http://www.telecertificati.it/catasto-p ... ml#storica

I think you should try to ask of a "visura catastale su soggetto" about your ancestor. That will give you the properties and variations of them of one single person.
Hope this can help.
