Help with finding info on Romano, Ignazio

Post by Searcher44 »

Hello,
I'm brand new to this Forum, and am looking for help in finding my wife's ancestors. Her grandfather, Ignazio Romano emigrated to the US (New York) in 1909, and I believe I have found the ship manifest information. The ship, Taormina, left from Naples and arrived 29 Apr 1909. The records show a first name of "Gzio" and the last place of residence "S. Massi, Piscino." I haven't been able to find anything on the last residence in Italy. His manifest line number is 29, and if I'm reading it correctly, he appears to be meeting a cousin Vincenzo Mascio. My father- in-law (d.) said his father was born on 01 Mar 1884. I think that should be "Maggio" because his wife's (my wife's grandmother) name was Filipa Maggio. My father-in-law also said his father was from Mazzara, which I also cannot locate. Filapa, DOB 28Feb ?? may be Filippa Maggio from S.Ninfa ?? South Italy who arrived on 07Jun1906 on ship Citta Di Gennova from Palermo (Manifest line #15), along with a cousin (?) Romano, Baldassarre (sp?) shown on line 18. They were meeting a brother Gasper and a brother-in-law, Francesco DiStefano, respectively. Both show Morgan Street, and I think that is in Brooklyn, NY
I'm at a loss with the Italian language, so I could use some help with the locations in Italy. Thank you, Jerry

For reference Taormina 1909 manifest:

Page 1
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0029

Page 2
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0029
Since the manifest shows nearest relative in Italy as wife Caterina and a destination of Rochester, I don't believe this is the correct person.

Wow!!! I'm absolutely floored with the assistance and the amount of information you all obtained. Also, the fact that I was barking up the wrong tree with the Immigration record of "Gzio" Romano would have had me searching in a totally different direction. Thank you all so much for your help. I'm really anxious now to pursue the search of my father-in-law's ancestors. I subscribed to Ancestry.com last night in the hope of spending the winter finding some of the very records you all found for me in one night. I'm amazed at the speed at which you were able to find everything, and while I don't expect to come close to that, I'm encouraged that it can indeed be located. Again thank all of you so very much, and I hope I didn't burn out my welcome. I may have to ask for help again, for both Italy and Ireland. Jerry

Jerry,

We're happy to have been of help. Let us know if you need any other assistance. Based on Ignazio's manifest, we know he was joining a brother Diego in Brooklyn; from Diego's manifest, he was joining a brother Francesco.

Following is an excellent search site for records. It's linked to other sites and is where I located the marriage, death and naturalization records I posted.

Thanks Biff. I looked at the "One Step" site and I was actually able to find information (that you had already found), that I hadn't been able to find on Ancestry.com. But, I can see where navigating through the different menus will take some practice. I did wind up getting lost for a couple of hours in what is quickly becoming my "winter" hobby. I wasn't able to find as much information as "suanj" did with regards to the immigration records of Ignazio (meeting Diego...and then finding Diego's records, and also the Town of birth info), but I'll keep trying. As I said, I am enthusiastic about this and am encouraged by the quick success of all of you. I'm just not too sure about the value of Ancestry.com. But, we'll see. Thanks again. Jerry
