"pucciarella" research

Post by jllaf »

According to the 1900 Federal Census, my great-grandmother Filomena pucciarella, along with daughter Angelina and son paolo, immigrated to the US (New York) in 1893. They probably came over with my great-grandfather Gianbattiste, who likely died in 1896. I cannot find any record of their trip. Can you help? (It's quite possible that there was a name change from "pucciarelli" somewhere along the line.) Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum-
do you know what town in Italy they came from? did if they remain in the NY area? Other than the 1900 census record, do you have any other U.S. records for them?

Are they on the 1900 census on Baxter Street with children Antonia and Ferdinando?

That census shows an 1891 year of immigration with only Ferdinando being born in NY.

I'm told they may have come from pisticci, but not entirely certain. They lived in Manhattan when they first arrived. Angelina married Giovanni LaFianza on June 19, 1899 in Manhattan (I have the record). She died September 1959. Having been widowed in 1896, Filomena married again, around 1900, to John Spizzirro.

Again, many thanks.

Their address is listed as 28 Madison Street. It lists Giovanni LaFianza (head of houshold), Angelina LaFianza (wife) Filomena pucciarella (mother-in-law), paolo pucciarella (son of Filomena) and Giovanna pucciarella(daughter of Filomena - born in NY).

Federal Census Record: Manhattan Borough, Supervisor's District 1, Ennumeration District 29, Sheet 16, Ward 4, June 9, 1900.

Okay, I had the wrong census because I was searching under her surname from her first marriage.

Filomena was born pucciarella (or pucciarelli).

The death record for Gianbattiste is most likely that of my great-grandfather. What additional information will be on the death certificate?

The earliest death record I have from NYC is from 1907 and the deceased parents' names and town of birth in Italy is not on the record. It only says he was born in Italy and has his cause of death.

Are you saying that Filomena's maiden and married names were basically
the same?

it also has his occupation, age at death, location of his death, and place and date of burial

That has to be a very bad misspelling of Filomena's maiden name, and I am trying to figure out what the correct Italian spelling might be, as she may have entered the U.S. under her maiden and not married name.

Agree that the spelling of pronie looks dubious, but I have a copy of the original marriage cert and that is how it's spelled there.

Thank you suanj for your posting. It's a possibility, but it seems he came with children whose names I don't recognize. It is also contrary to the death record of the other Gianbattiste I found, who died in 1896 at age 36. They ost likely are two different individuals. Do you know what the triangle represents to the left of his name on the manifest?
