If you do a search of the board I think you'll find some posts - Gianna's is one. She got her citizenship in one visit.
My parents have their appts in Newark next year; I've been collecting their documents and in the process corresponding w/others who've used Newark. To summarize, based on those experiences, this is how I'm preparing:
1. Newark staff are sticklers for direct line name and date correspondence from document to document. So I'm amending every direct line vital record to match birth certs - both their own vital records and their info on their children's vital records.
2. No focus on non-direct line, with one important caveat: I've heard some reports that Newark expects correspondence of non-direct line info as such appears on direct line documents. So, as an example, if the name of the spouse of the direct line ancestor is one thing on the marriage cert and another thing on the birth cert of the next direct line ancestor, amend it. I do not plan to worry about correspondence w/other non-directline docs - like correspondence between the non-direct's name on the marriage cert and their own birth cert.
3. All direct line vital records issued the US, including your's, need to be translated.
4. I hear they are really nice and helpful.
Good Luck!
I would do it where the majority of documents are from NY or NJ etc to reduce waiting time. I heard that even between close states they send it to other consulates for verification of apostilles etc. I read that on another citizenship forum and can not really tell if its true. It would seem the newark consulate can recognize a NYC apostille so, someone feel free to correct me if you think im wrong.
Actually, screamingmonkey, Carmine is correct. You do not have an option. Even if all your documents originate in NY, if you live in the Newark jurisdiction, that's where you apply.
I do believe, however, that Newark is familiar with NY-issued documents. When I submitted my application there, they told me that my Texas document would have to be sent to Texas, but they did not mention any of my NY documents. Didn't move things too quickly, though. Eight months later, my application was still sitting untouched in their files.
Mler do you know if that applies to all documents? if someone is applying in NYC but has documents from brazil , does the consulate send the to a brazilian consulate for verification?
I'm really not sure why they do this. At Newark, the consular officer asked me if I was certain that the Texas document was in long form (given the length of the document and the information it provided, I would have thought this was obvious). She then told me that they would be sending it to Texas to be certain. That may be one reason, but I agree that the apostille should be sufficient. Too bad I'm not making the rules.

We live in an age when anyone with a computer could create an official-looking document. If the Newark consulate (as an example) has never before seen a birth certificate from Idaho (as an example) and the applicable apostille, they send if off to the consulate which has jurisdiction over Idaho and ask, "Is this real?"
The second consulate may then choose to contact the Idaho Secretary of State's office and ask them to confirm that the particular apostille number was indeed issued on the given date in certification of the document to which it is attached.
Makes sense if you think about it...

I have good news I was given my day to go to the consulate in newark except I have to wait until november of 2011. I guess it will give me plenty of time to get all my documents straight.
Any one here has experiences with turning in documents from Argentina?
my grandfather was married and passed away in Argentina. my dad was born in Argentina also. I have the documents with official stamp and signatures. I'm just afraid they might not think they are official. Does anyone know how strict they are with spellings of last name? my grandfather's mother's last name is spelled differently in all 3 documents but very close, Chiacchiera, chiaquera and Quiaquiera. will I have to amend those documents?
thanks and Merry christmas abd happy Holidays to all!!!!
Looking for the surnames Mosca( Marches ), Pizzoglio (Piedmonte), Chiacchiera, Lobasso(Bari), Gallo(Malvito), Azzolina (Messina).
My guess is that they will forward the Argentine documents to the consulate in Argentina for verification since they told me they would forward Texas documents to Texas. They are pretty strict about names, but if your greatgrandmother is not in the direct line, they may well overlook it.
