Looking for Tagliareni, Francesco Great Grandfather

Post by Jtag324 »

Francesco and wife Marietta Di Marco left Naples on June 28 1902 with children Domenico and Salvatore and cousin Pietro Tagliareni. They arrived in New York July 17 1902 on SS Karamania. The family listed previous residence as Camarotta, Agrigento, Sicily, Italy. I am not sure where Francesco was born but it was in 1876. I'm not sure why they left from Naples but this is what the New York Passenger list showed - they may have originated from Palermo?

Thanks in advance for any information :!:
Thanks,

Hi Jtag324, and welcome :-)

The comune is spelled "Cammarata" and more than likely they took a boat from Palermo to the Port of Naples (which was common) to board this ship.
There were also ships that sailed from Palermo...

If you think Francesco or Maria were born in Cammarata, you can write directly to the comune (town) and request records...

Write to:

Received an email today from Ufficio dello Stato Civile that basically says that I didn't give them enough information to get the birth certificate.
I filled out the information requested on the web site http://circolocalabrese.org/resources/l ... civile.asp and followed the instructions sending a registered letter.
I was disappointed that the email didn't specify what additional information was necessary. Any clues as to what additional information is necessary?

email I received:
From:"statocivile@comune.cammarata.ag.it" <statocivile@comune.cammarata.ag.it>

Si comunica che questo ufficio di Stato Civile è impossibilitato a rilasciare l'estratto di nascita di TAGLIARENI FRANCESCO, nato a Cammarata nel 1876, in quanto i dati da voi inviati sono insufficienti.

Hi,
the reply of Cammarata civil records officer, is negative because the data provided are no enough... however I understand that by ship's manifestthe Francesco age seeming 26 ( so born abt in 1876 and the first son, Domenico, seeming 11 old instead of 4 old, because Domenico was born on 16 Apr 1898)
but if the following records are rights:

First Name: Francesco
Middle Name:
Last Name: Tagliareni
Name Suffix:
Birth Date: 23 April 1873

Social Security Number: XXXXXXXXXXX
Place of Issuance: New Jersey
Last Residence:
Zip Code of Last Residence:
Death Date : January 1963
Estimated Age at Death: 90

1920 census:
Name: Frank Taglarini
Residence: , Hudson, New Jersey
Estimated Birth Year: 1873
Age: 47
Birthplace: Italy
Relationship to Head of Household: Self
Gender: Male
Race: White
Marital Status: Married
Father's Birthplace:
Mother's Birthplace:
Film Number: 1821044
Digital Folder Number: 4313345
Image Number: 00465
Sheet Number: 15
Household Gender Age
Frank Taglarini M 47y
Spouse Mary Taglarini

Francesco seeming born in 1873... maybe for that the Cammarata reply is negative...

also, if this record is abt right Francesco:

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
about Francisco Tagliareri
Name: Francisco Tagliareri ( Tagliareni)
City: Jersey City
County: Hudson
State: New Jersey
Birth Date: 23 Apr 1873
Race: White
FHL Roll Number: 1712206
DraftBoard: 3

so maybe, if my suggestion is right, you can write again in Cammarata explaining that you now have the right birthdate...

suanj,

Thanks so much for your replies! I don't know if we have searched the same data bases but you seem to have hit the nail on the head. I think both of your record searches have the correct person because I know that Francesco was in the service. Do you think that I can try an email to Cammarata or will I need to write a letter? Also do I have to ask for other documents or once the person is identified will that lead to others like marriage, service records, passports, etc.
Thanks,

Just found evidence that my Great Grandfather Francesco went back to Sicily in 1910. He had to sell some property back in Sicily (rumor). His return to USA second time by New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957.
This time they asked for actual birth place and he indicated Girgenti, Italy.
Not sure what the birth location other is all about - maybe he was not sure. I think I have been looking in the wrong town though.
Guess I need the address of L'UFF.LE DELLO STATO CIVILE in Agrigento (Girgenti Sicilian for Agrigento)

Name: Francesco Tagliareni
Arrival Date: 24 Jan 1910
Birth Year: abt 1874
Birth Location: Girgenti, Italy
Birth Location Other: s giovanino gan
Age: 36
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race-
/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Palermo, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Re D Italia

Birth Location: Girgenti, Italy
Birth Location Other: s giovanino gan
Age: 36
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race-
/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Palermo, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Re D Italia

the above my posting abt 1920 census and WWI draft registration card are abt same Francesco Tagliareni( b. 1873), because the address in 1920 census is the same that in WWI draft registration card:

342 5th st Jersey City, NJ

in 1910 census:
1910 United States Federal Census
about Frank Tagiareni Name: Frank Tagiareni
Age in 1910: 36
Estimated birth year: 1874
Birthplace: Italy

Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Spouse's name: Maria Tagiareni
Home in 1910: Jersey City Ward 5, Hudson, New Jersey
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Year of immigration: 1900
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Frank Tagiareni 36
Maria Tagiareni 28
Domenico Tagiareni 13
Salvatore Tagiareni 12
Tony Tagiareni 7
Katherine Tagiareni 3

Louis De Marco 19 brother in law
Peter Barbarino 36
Frank Barbarino 25
Callogiore Barbarino 23
http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/6238 ... ni1910.jpg

home address: 185 Wayne st

on the 1910 ship's manifest: 185 ... ( no st) Jersey City
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0010
seeming right.... the only discrepancy is abt Maria Filiparo and no Maria Di Marco...

and if right this new input, let us understand that in first trip, Cammarata was the last residence only, and really Francesco Tagliareni was born in San Giovanni Gemini ( Agrigento province) and not in Cammarata; both the towns are very close... map:
http://maps.google.it/maps?hl=it&q=san+ ... CBwQ8gEwAA

the San Giovanni Gemini civil records office email address is:
statocivile @ comune.sangiovannigemini.ag.it

NO SPACES please

but before of write, because on Ancestry.com it are the civil records of all communes of Agrigento province, better to search on line.. and in effects:

the marriage:

groom
TAGLIARENI Francesco age 25 shoemaker, born in San Giovanni Gemini, son of late Domenico and of late Caterina AMORMINO

and
bride
DI MARCO Marietta age 18 housewife, born in Cammarata, daughter of Salvatore( residing in New York, USA) and of Concetta DI MARCO
(residing in Cammarata)

married in Cammarata the 29 may 1898
http://img813.imageshack.us/img813/8020 ... rriage.jpg
so really Francesco Tagliareni was born in 1873 in San Giovanni Gemini
so now you can write in San Giovanni Gemini asking the Francesco birth certificate..

suanj,

Thank you so very much for your help in solving the mystery of my great grandfather's roots! I did do some searching in the Ancestry.com Civil Records of all Communes of Agrigento province. Those records are in Italian which left me at a disadvantage, I think, even though I'm using ImTranslator for Firefox.
I did send an email to the San Giovanni Gemini civil records office as you recommended. I will let you know when I receive the birth certificate.
Thanks,

suanj,

I did receive an "Extract of the Register of Births" and a "Certificate of Family Status" after sending a second email in February this year. I think my first email sent in 2010 wasn't received for some reason and I didn't find out until early February. I tried attaching a PDF - thought you may be interested to see the documents - but it was taking a long time so I cancelled it. The family status showed three children named Giuseppe which I thought was unusual. The birth extract also showed Francesco born on 26 April instead of 23 April which is what my info showed.
We are hoping to make a trip to Italy sometime in near future and hope to visit San Giovanni Gemini along with other beautiful cities in Italy.

Thanks Again for your help,
Jim

Hi Jim,

You might try uploading your images to an image-sharing site such as http://www.postimage.org
Then copy and paste the URL for Thumbnails for Forum1

As for the 3 children named Giuseppe... you might search the death records for the deaths of the first 2...
