Getting State of the Family Certificates

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Getting State of the Family Certificates

Post by Gviola »

Has anyone ever used the site "My Italian Family" to request Sate of the Family certificates or birth death and/or marriage certificates. Any pros or cons about using the service?

Use an independent researcher they are more likely to follow up. I used forum member ricbru cuz other services did not follow up etc

Hello and welcome! :-)

If you have the town of birth/marriage, why not try writing to the comune directly. There is no cost involved.

If you need research done, I would go with screaminmonkey's suggestion of "ricbru" here at the forum.

Some background information on the available records, what they contain, and where you can find them...if you don't already know :-)

If you choose to do it on your own you should call them if at all possible. Italian law requires that the commune follows up on written request but honestly they can be slow. They do have to deal with daily business of the commune residents so it's understandable. But for sure call them.

The problem I had with a state of the family certificate is that comune has to have ad a anagrafi at the time you wanted it for, so for example in my comune they had an anagraphi from 1911 on. I want a cert from 1890, so I am out of luck. The anagraphi is the same person as the stato civile but they have to change hats, so to speak, slightly different function. good luck.
