Still NO luck finding where Catello Zullo entered the US.

Post by JoeZurlo »

Hello all, BIG thank you to Suanj for providing valuable information in my search for my Great Grandfather, Catello Zullo. Still a crucial piece of the puzzle is still missing. Catello says he arrived in the US 1890 from Castellammare di Stabia, but Ellis Island and Castle Garden have no records of his arrival. If he arrived in 1890 he was nine years old. Surname was misspelled Zurolo and Zurlo, correct spelling is Zullo. Libees mentioned other ports of arrival such a Philladelphia and Atlantic ports. Any web sites for these that don't charge? Where else can I look? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

If he arrived in 1890, you would not find his passenger list with the Ellis Island Records, as those only begin in 1892. On the castlegarden.org website, there is, unfortunately, no way to do a sound search of the surname. So, if it is badly misspelled, unless you can creatively come up with a lot of variations in spelling of the surname yourself, you won't find him on that website either.

As far as I know, steamship arrivals from Italy to ports such as Boston, Philadelphia, and Baltimore did not begin until 1904.

I am linking your other thread here, as I see on that thread that you say that the 1906 arrival is not him

Thanks for your help and no that isn't him in 1906. So where in 1890 did immigrants arrive on the East Coast?

The information Maestra gave is incorrect. Arrival at other ports on the East Coast, etc., can be found 1800 onward. I have family members who arrived in 1840 and 1846 in Philedelphia. The same is true of Boston. I used the Steve Morse one step web pages to start with. It then went to Ancestry for a search.

My question is did those ships originate in Italian ports or did they originate in German ports or British ports, etc? I don't believe they originated in Italian ports, but you can correct me if I am wrong.

So sorry Maestra,

Departures for Italian ports were after 1900 but some French ports were used early on.

Sorry that what I typed above was misleading. Yes, there were Italians coming into various East Coast U.S. ports early on, but they didn't travel directly from Italy. Actually departures from Italian ports started in 1890. My one great grandfather arrived in 1893 and he left from the port of Naples.

I know this is off topic but Maestra, can you take a look at the translation section and see if you can read what I posted. Livio gave it a try but he couldn't read the notation on the last Liste di Leva anymore than I could.

Thank you

From what I know there were ships leaving from Genova and arriving to the port of NY already since 1850s...

Hi all;
it is very hard to find Catello arrival; by italian military draft registration card, Catello resulting to be in NY, USA; the italian military draft registration card is of 1900 year, so in 1900 Catello was in NY; surely he immigrated before, maybe with parents, and I found that Catello had a sister, Carmela married in Manhattan, New York

I cannot find more abt Generoso Lopez and Carmela nee Zullo( aka Zurlo); maybe descovering the 1900 census of Carmela or Catello we can know with more precision the immigration year...
all the best,

ahh.. finally I found the 1905 census of Carmela Lopez nee Zullo/Zurlo:

129 Ginario Lopez 1877 — Italy Manhattan, New York, New York Male | 28y | W | Head
130 Camello Lopez 1879 — Italy Manhattan, New York, New York Female | 26y | W | Wife
in USA from 16 years, so arrived abt in 1889! citizen!

In same page( right page) ZULLO Vincenzo and wife Filomena ( Caterina changed the first name?) and Dora daughter....
It cannot be a coincidence; I am sure that Carmela Lopez is Catello's sister!
And the Vincenzo ZULLO in 1905 must be the Catello's father! immigrated from 25 years, so abt 1880/1... at this point immigrated just after Catello birth... wife and daughter imm. around 1898... Filomena must be Caterina nee Coppola...

I am positive that they are the Catello parents and siblings...

Carmela Lopez is without the husband in 1910 census and is registered with maiden name and single:
1910 United States Federal Census

lacking on the census ( may 1910) the other sister of Catello: Dora Zullo; she was 17 in 1905 so born abt in 1888....
I hope of to find more abt Catello also!
