Mori Family in Sestri Levante, Italy

Post by BrianLandolfi »

Looking for Mori family members in Sestri Levante. My great grandfather, Vincenzo, was born here in 1848. Some of the family may have immigrated to Argentina. Vincenzo ended up in New York. I know he later traveled back to Italy to visit with family.

Thanks,
Brian

I forgot to mention that Vincent also had 4 brothers and 2 sisters. He visited this Genoa area in 1911. He joined the Italian Navy after leaving for Buenos Aires, Argentina, and jumped ship in New York. He married in NY and evenutally settled down in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

Yes, this is him. I certainly appreciate your feedback.

I'm really looking for family connections in the Sestri Levante area and/or Buenos Aires, Argentina. Like I mentioned, he had 4 brothers and 2 sisters. I believe the family moved to Argentina when he was younger, but they also left family back in the Sestri Levante region. The record you found is on a trip he took to Genoa to visit with family - so I know he must have family in this region. His wife is

If I can locate a birth record for Vincenzo Mori in Sestri Levante, I feel like I can make some real progress.

They may have also been visting his wife's family. Katherina (or possibly Catherina) Bacigalupo/Bacigalupi was born in Gattorna, Italy on 10/19/1855. She had an older sister, Theresa, and perhaps a brother. Her father came to the US by himself and must have landed in NY. He went back to Italy & brought his wife and the two girls to NY. He wanted to go back to Italy and took Katherina with him. But the mother and Theresa went to Chicago and lived there and the mother died in Chicago. The father died in Italy while Katherina was still young, making her an orphan in Gattorna (?). She lived in a Convent and worked there. At 18 she left Italy and came to NYC where she met Vincent & they were married.

Thanks Suanj but you did the great job... :D

I tend to believe that the lastname could have been also Mora and your last find makes me think about this...

Wow, thank you so much suanj, Laura and Marty A. All this info is very helpful. I don't know about the Mora surname variation. It is certainly a possibility until we find another relative or a birth record of my great grandfather. I think I've found about as much info on the family in the US as I can right now. I'm going to follow-up with some churches in Sestri Levante and possible Italian Navy records?

Thanks once again. You guys are really fantastic!!

Hi, no many Mora in Sestri Levante; on line the civil records starting from 1866; I found a marriage act abt a Vincenzo Mora age 23 dìson of Giovanbattista Mora and of Luigia Marn..(?), married in Sestri Levante in 1868 at Maria Virginia Vattuone age 22, daughter of Nicolò Vattuone and Maria Chiappa...( ?)
it could be possible that your Vincenzo was married in Italy... ??

No, I don't think this is the same Vincenzo. He married Caterina (Katherine or Kate) Bacigalupi or Bacigalupo probably around 1874 in New York. They ended up having 11 children together and settled in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

Vincenzo Mori supposedly was a member of the Italian Navy and jumped ship in NY (which would have been before 1874). I believe this might have been one of the reasons for a name change in NY?? Do you know of any way to search Italian Navy records?

Thanks,
Brian

I checked 15 years of Sestri Levante civil record, and I found a very little number of Moras; 2 was died infants... so no many Moras in Sestri Levante... I no found children born from this couple until 1880...

you said very well: ".... supposedly ...", because by family rumors and by what said in USA the ancestor... but who know? so ".... supposedly ..." is the correct word...
Many times the italians leaving the wife in Italy and remarried in USA; obviously that cannot be the case of Vincenzo...
to find the marriage in NY abt Vincenzo could be helpful almost for to know the parent's names, so also for Caterina...

abt the Navy, in Genova archive it are this folder:
Matricola gente di mare > 1843- 1869
where the 1843 must be the birthyear of men in the Navy
maybe Vincenzo data can be here;
abt the military records in Genova Archive they starting from men born in 1870, so no helpful...

Hello Suanj. I have just read your posts on this subject. You say that the civil records for Sestri Levante are available on-line. Can you tell me where to find them please? I can't find any in ancestry.com or in familysearch.org and can't think where else to look. Thanks, Emanuele.
