De Cellis
De Cellis
My great great grandmother was named Carmela DeCellis (DeSillis, etc, etc.) born April 27, 1879. Her death certificate says that she was born in Santo Felo, Italy (no such place). Also, her husband was Vito Vaccaro from Avigliano. They would have emigrated around 1896 after the birth of thier first daughter, Anna, who was born in Avigliano. They settled in Stamford, CT. I've struck out quite a bit with these. Vito I was able to locate through letter writing to Avigliano. I have had no such luck with the other two. I have written to the National Archives to check on Anna's naturalization forms, but so far, again, no luck.
Re: De Cellis
Name could possibly be De Cillis.

Re: De Cellis
Hi, vj
Sounds like the right family, but the census info doesn't fit regarding the birth of !st child.

Re: De Cellis
Hi mj
Here's a possible 1910
Valarie
Immigration dates are more likely
Maria may be Anna (Mariantonia?)
Assunta may be Susan
First son Pepino?? isn't on the census, but daughter Josephine is the correct age

Re: De Cellis
thanks for the work on this one. That's our info, misbris. Carmella had 13 children. I have the 1910, 20 and 30 censuses on them. I'm just stuck going any further back on her. Hrm...
Re: De Cellis
I think vj is correct about the 1900 census, but dates are inconsistent on immigration.
If Vito immigrated 1892 or later, records will be at Ellis Island. Earlier records are at Castle Garden, but early manifests don't give much info.

Re: De Cellis
I know that lastname is completely different from De Cillis/Di Cellis but this 1896 arrival manifest maybe worth a look:

Re: De Cellis
Hrm...that sounds like a tack to take.
Was Anna a nickname for Mariantonio?

Re: De Cellis
Great find Laura !
It's possible that Mariantonia may have been traveling with a relative or friend of the family if this Carmela isn't her mother.

Re: De Cellis
update!!!
Wow is all I have to say. I think Laura might have gotten it right!
So I went to the registrar of births in Stamford, CT. today and was able to look at the birth records for Carmella Vaccaro's other children. Lo and behold, Carmella's last name is listed differently for each birth!
See how it changes!
post 1915 - DeCillis
1912 - DeGuiles
1910 - Diagilis
1909 - DeCrelis
1906 - Risboris
1903 - Resabone
1901 - Risabone
It morphs from one to the next. And...see how much more similar Risabone is to Lisbona!
How is this much change possible?
AND on the post 1915 entry her home town is listed as San Veil. I thinka follow up letter to San Fele is due...everyone agree???
I am truly stunned about this and extremely excited that this route is open again.
HUGE THANKS!!!

Re: De Cellis
Don't forget the other suggestion made about place of birth.
http://italiangenealogy.tardio.com/Foru ... 20416.html
Lisbona is a surname that appears in Campania.

Re: De Cellis
I will have to order the films for Montefalcione to see if this is correct. Thanks for the suggestion!
