Searching for 2nd great grandfathers heritage - Traverca

Post by sandiMB »

His name on US records is Mariano Travirca. I believe it may have been Traversa. He came to the US somewhere between 1855 and 1868. He married in the U.S. when he was 29. U.S. census records state that his mother and father were from Italy and that he spoke Italian. I can't find any ship records with his name on it. I'm not sure where to go from here so any help would be great. Grazie!

Laura

I believe that Mariano's place of origin may have been a north region of Italy (for example the Trentino Alto Adige region who was under the Austro Hungarian Empire until 1919... this may be the reason Mariano stated he was born in Austria in the 1900 census..) this is just my thought...

Thank you so much for this information. I had the 1900 census and that's where I was confused on the Austria info. I will certainly follow that lead. I was really surprised at the 1880 census and the spelling Savaker, but that definitely is the family. I don't know why his wife wasn't there as her youngest son was barely a year old. She is in the 1920 census. Do you know if any of these spellings of the surname are names found in this region? Grazie!

Prego Sandi!

I don't know which was the correct italian lastname, I can only suppose it was possibly Traversa/Traverso (not many of them in the Trentino Alto Adige region though)...
You can use this helpful site to find the actual spread of the lastnames in Italy:

http://www.gens.labo.net/it/cognomi/genera.html

There are Traversa in the Lombardy region, at the boarder with Switzerland...

You can use this site too to find in which towns a lastname is present:

I researched Hungarian surnames and came up with several that are very close, especially Travicza. When he left Italy, what would have been the most common seaport to leave from?

I'm back to researching Mariano Travirca and came across a passenger list in 1845. A Mariano Travaco was 5 years old traveling with a Jose Honorats G. Du Camara? who is a native of St. Michaels (don't know if this is England or Barbados). I noticed there is a region in Italy Travaco Siccomario. Could he have been an orphan and DuCamara? took him as a servant? Is there any records of orphans in this region?

Hey Sandi, I stumbled upon your thread by an accidental google search. I did a bit of research on the US side of your family thanks to familysearch and I believe the surname of your ancestor had to have been Travirca since all his descendants have kept it until this day.

That being said, there is actually a Travirca family that originated from Trogir (Trau) in the region of Dalmatia in the present-day Croatia which was, in the 19th century, a part of the Austrian Empire. The region was also a part of the Venetian Republic until its collapse in 1797 and Italian remained the language of official documents until the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian in 1918. The Travirca family has almost died out in Croatia, with a single household being recorded in Zadar in the census of 2001. They go by the spelling Travirka, which is how the italianized Travirca would have been pronounced in Croatian. The Travirca lived in Trogir from as early as the early 1600s and it is not clear whether the first Travirca there was a member of a pre-existing family whose nickname replaced the surname or if it was an immigrant from somewhere else.

That being said, I found here that this 2nd great grandfather of yours was recorded also as Marino Travirca (source:
http://www.three-systems.com/gen/direct ... html#I1802)

If this was the case, and he was 29 when he married, then he could be Marino Vincenzo Travirca born in Trogir on March 07, 1840 to Antonio Travirca (Ante Travirka) and Maria Suria (Marija Šurija). This Marino Travirca was still alive in Trogir in c. 1860, but was no longer there in the census of 1874. Unfortunately nothing was noted about his whereabouts so he could have either went elsewhere (i.e. to the US) or died. You can find his family tree on geni here: https://www.geni.com/people/Marino-Trav ... 9084525834 if you do find my response here, and gave more questions, please contact me over geni, i am the manager of that profile.

Regards,
Marino

My name is Mary Angela Smith. Mariano Travirca is my maternal great great grandfather. I think you solved the mystery of his origins. As a child, I was puzzled about being told he was born in Austria, but learning from my mother's cousin that he didn't speak English very well and that he and someone named Fuentes often conversed in Spanish. Since Spanish and Italian are somewhat similar, I thought he must actually be from Italy. The explanation about Travircas from Croatia and it once being part of the Austria Hungarian Empire, but the official language being Italian until 1919 pulls it all together. Thank you so much! I wish my mother was still alive so I could share with her.
