Looking for info on Sarlo family from Contursi, SA pre 1910

I'm looking for any information or help obtaining information about my Great-Grandfather, Pasquale Sarlo from Contursi and his family.

Hi,

Today must be Contursi Day!! As I told Michelle in her previous post, the only 2 Sarlos who came through Ellis Island from Contursi were Antonio and Pietro and it looks like they were going to Forlenza family in Pittsburg. The name Sarlo does not exist in Italy today. And only about 100 with that name came through Ellis Island.

I'll check other ports. Do you have an approximate date of immigration?

I'll also look up th name of the woman in the Anagraf's office who helped ,e.

Do you have any information like when they came ?

I know that my great-grandfather and his brother Orazio came over in the early 1920's and Antonio and Pietro were their brothers.

I have met many Sarlo from Italy though, and I've met some of my cousins from Italy before. I was curious about Pietro and Antonio's families if you have any information.

Pasquale came to America through Philadelphia, PA. with his brother Orazio.

I am very curious about their brothers and where they moved to.

We knew nothing of this.

Forlenza was my great-grandmother Vincenza's mothers name. She married Pasquale. As you mentioned before though, Forlenza is a very common name in Contursi.

Yes, I have connections with a few groups of family over there that stayed in Contursi or moved to England.
There is also a large group of Sarlo in Reggio Calabria who we haven't been able to discover if a connection exists or not.

The Sarlo name is pretty rare. My last name is also rare and we have been able to trace that all the Brisciones originally came from Contursi. But haven't yet found out how thy got to Contursi. Rumor is that it is originally French.

I have found that the more unusual the name the easier it is to trace. Unfortunately Contursi records only go back to 1869. Also the church was partialyy destroyed during an earthquake, so I don't know what records survived.

Yeah, I would love to know how my family got to Contursi. No guesses yet...

I can't believe that I have found my nephew. It's exciting to see that others know this much about our family.

This is what I think that I know. Pasquale Sarlo came to the US in 1921 thru Philly to stay with his brother Orazio in Pittston PA. He was 18 at the time. He took Americanization classes in Waterbury CT and became a citizen in 1930. He must have returned to Contursi to/and(???) married my grandmother Vincenza Manzione in late 1930/early 1931. They both arrived in the US in April of 1931 by entering thru Ellis Island. They would live in WTBY until Pasquale died in April of 1937.

Pasquale had 3 brothers, Pietro, who I take as the oldest, born ca. 1892 and arrived in 1910 to live with a cousin Felice Viola, in Pittsburgh(???) Orazio, born ca. 1895/6, came to live with Pietro in Pittston PA in 1914. Antonio is a mystery to me. Its great to see that name on that document, and Vitantonio Forlenza may be the key here since my great grandmother's maiden name was Forlenza, but I don't know how old he was. We have relatives now that are still in Contursi and are the direct descendants of Antonio. We are waiting to hear more info from them.
