Help with a name...Lily

Post by LeandraCat »

Is LILY and Italian name? If someone was called Lillian by the family, was she born LILLIANA possibly? What other name could she have been born with, to be called Lillian?
I just can't seem to find Lilian or Liliana Torino/Torrino in the Ellis Island Manifests. She came with her family around 1912-1913. I don't know her parents' names, though.

She was married by 1920 to Paul Schillaci, living in Garfield. It says she was naturalized in 1919...

Any help is MUCH appreciated!

Thank you!

Liliana is what I was thinking too.
Thanks for the website! It's going to be helpful in the future!
I have noticed that names are not always translated the way you would think...is Salvatore really Charles, for example? Since I could not find a Lily/Lillian/Liliana in the Manifest, I figured her name must have been something else...either that, or I was given the wrong Maiden name by family members.

Thanks agian

Julia, please remember that not all of our ancestors entered the US at Ellis Island. Thousands (tens of thousands?) came in through Boston, New Orleans, and several other ports. Not to mention the ones that sailed into Canadian ports and then crossed the border into the US by train or other means.

Do you have any additional information? Year of birth? Sibling's names?

Yes, I know there were other ports of Entry...
She was born in 1903 according to her Census Records with her husband.
I don't know any sibling names.
The 1930 Census says she is 27, was married at 15, Arrived in 1913 and became Naturalzed.
The 1920 Census says she is 18, Arrived in 1912 and became Naturalized in 1919.

That's all I know...I guess that's just not enough :(

Carmine, I can attest to that. I was told for years that my grandfather came through Ellis as my grandmother did. This did not turn out to be the case. He came through boston.

Paolo Schillaci is Lily's husband. His Ellis Island record is the one for 1904.

I have lost track of this: did Paolo and "Lily" marry in the US or in Italy?

Where did they live in the US?

On the 1920 Census (which has the surname incorrectly transcribed as "Schellas") it looks like the name was recorded as "Lina" - but in Ancestry it is transcribed as "Liara"

You might want to get a copy of one of the children's birth records. They were both born in NJ. Thomas about 1918, and John in Sept/Oct 1919 (the census was taken on the 22 of January and John is listed as 3 months old)
This should have the mother's full name.

Carmine, no, my Lillian lived in Garfield, so she died in New Jersey.

Tessa78: Lillian was my mother-in-law's Grandmother. She is the one that told me her name. I will have to ask her again, what her name was, and when she died...I can't find her in the Social Security Death Index, either...as Lillian Schillaci. There is only a Lillian Rose Schillaci, but that's a granddaughter or great-granddaughter....

In the 1930 Census, she is listed as Lily. The 1920 Census is VERY poor and the names were totally butchered!

Thanks!
