Michael McCello

Post by sastinam »

You guys did such a great job on my costello line, I am hoping you can help on this one too. the only proof I have of him is his daugher Rose's
Marriage license which I have attached. I know for sure the name was changed, and no idea what the original name was. I cant find him anywhere.

Hi,
because Rose's mother was Mary A Pierce nee Holliday/Halliday, and Mary A is in 1900 census with second husband Eugine Pierce,

you found the marriage between Michael McCello and Mary A Holliday??

Mary is in 1880 census:

United States Census, 1880 for Mary A. Halliday
Name: Mary A. Halliday
Residence: Olean, Cattaraugus, New York
Birthdate: 1870
Birthplace: New York, United States
Relationship to Head: Daughter
Spouse's Name:
Spouse's Birthplace:
Father's Name: Frank Halliday
Father's Birthplace: New York, United States
Mother's Name: Barbary Halliday
Mother's Birthplace: New York, United States
Race or Color (Expanded): White
Ethnicity (Standardized): American
Gender: Female
Martial Status: Single
Age (Expanded): 10 years
Occupation: School
NARA Film Number: T9-0812
Page: 425
Page Character: D
Entry Number: 5361
Film number: 1254812
Household Gender Age
Parent Frank Halliday M 33
Parent Barbary Halliday F 28
Mary A. Halliday F 10
Ellen Halliday F 7
Frances Halliday F 5
Emma Halliday F 3
Maud Halliday F 1

most probably Michael and Mary A married in Olean, Cattaraugus, New York
if you can find the marriage record, maybe the Michael surname is spelled better.... because McCello is mispelled, surely.....

In Ireland and Scotland, the prefix "Mc" means "son of".

It might be reasonable, therefore, to think in terms of "Di Cello" as the Italian equivalent.

Possible that the name was "Micello" :-)
This name is found throughout Italy today, with the greatest concentration in the Puglia Region.

The 1890 US Census is only a fragment... Suffolk and Westchester counties.

Maybe we can find a manifest for Michele - but since it will be before 1889 (Rose's birth) it will be an earlier manifest which hold little information...

I found only a:
1920 United States Federal Census
about Mike Mickello Name: Mike Mickello
Home in 1920: Olean, Cattaraugus, New York
Age: 50
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1870
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Self (Head)
[Head]
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Marital Status: Widowed
[Widow]
Race: White
Sex: Male
Home owned: Own
Year of immigration: 1885
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Mike Mickello 50

the age could be wrong.... maybe the italian surname spelling of this Michael could be Micale... in Cattaraugus was other Micales.. sometimes spelled on the censuses as Mc Cale

Interesting...

10 years later, in 1930, living on the same street:

1930 United States Federal Census about Mike Mckells

View Map
Age: 55
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1875
Birthplace: Italy

Relation to Head of House: Head
Race: White
Occupation:

Education:

Military Service:

Rent/home value:

Age at first marriage:

Parents' birthplace: View image
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Mike Mckells 55

** Edited to add: Also widowed; Immigrationd date is 1900. This person seems not too concerned that his name or age be entered correctly, so no reason to believe the 1900 date is accurate.

thank you Carmine, surely is the same person of 1920 census.... It could be the people that we are searching for, if, after Rose birth, he back in Italy and again in USA around 1900...
it is the only possible man.... if he lived in Cattaraugus, NY

Unfortunately, we still do not know the correct Italian spelling of his surname...

I looked through the Olean city directory of 1893-1894 at http://home.comcast.net/~dickallen5/nyc ... /index.htm

Nothing caught my eye; perhaps someone else will see what I missed.
