Grandmother born in Gaeta

Post by nancy711 »

I am trying to find out when my grandmother came to America via Ellis Island. The problem I have is that there is some confusion about her last name (unfortunately she and my mom have both passed away). Her marriage certificate gives her maiden name as Ranuzo, but her Naturalization papers state it as Ranucci. I have tried both names on the Ellis Island website and neither one has any entries.

She was born either in 1890 or 1894 (those certificates give different birth dates also). She came over as a young teenager, but I don't know what the exact year was.

Any suggestions on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Grandmother born in Gaeta

Oh my....yes that is my grandmother and my grandfather. I have their marriage certificate recorded in Boston, MA. My grandmother's name is identified as Matilda Ranuzo. Her parents identified as Cosmo Ranuzo and Annie Presta. Her date of birth is 1890. My grandfather's name on the certificate is Joseph Siccone. His parents are Patrick Siccone and Mary Durazamo. His date of birth is as you noted 1886.

I have not been able to find a ship's manifest with my grandmother's name listed. I did find a manifest with Guisseppe Siccone dated 1908. I thought it was him but then yesterday I found my grandparents listed in the 1920 US Census for Cambridge, MA. On that census it is noted that he immigrated in 1897 and she in 1910. I have not been able to find a manifest with his name on it for that date.

In my census search, I also found his parents living in Cambridge, MA also. It shows Patrick immigrating in 1891 and his wife in 1897. I have not found any manifests for them either.

I have not been able to find her father Cosmo on a census. However, I did find a manifest with his name on it, Cosmo Ranucci. He sailed on the SS Martha Washington from Napoli on 4/20/26. It says his nearest relative from the town he was leaving was his wife Giovanna Ranucci, Gaeta. His destination was Somerville, MA.

It is interesting that you have her mother's name as Nunziata Prestagiovanni (Nunziata/Civita) as his second wife. My grandmother's sister was named Civita and she was born well before he married the second time. She also told me that she had a sister named Frances. I think she told me that they all came to American together.

the information you have provided is wonderful. With this further information, perhaps you will be able to tell me a little more about both families, Siccone and Ranucci. I think my grandfather also came from Gaeta. He also had a brother Ralph and and a sister Florence (both of whom I have found on the census).

I can't thank you enough for your help.

yes me too found the Cosmo Ranucci trip of 1926, joining at son or daughter Francesco/a in Sommerville, MA...
Cosmo Ranucci ( right surname spelling) second marriage record:
Name: Cosano Ranucci
Titles & Terms:
Event: Marriage

same record with Cosimo first name:

On Matilde marriage record ( 1911), the address was 28 Hasting St, Cambridge, Middlesex, MA; Joseph Ciccone ( right surname spelling) the address was 36 Hasting St, Cambridge, Middlesex, MA; now because the 1910 census was of 16 apr 1910, and Joseph lived in 36 Hasting St, Cambridge, Middlesex, MA, in the 28 Hasting St, Cambridge, Middlesex, MA was another family and nobody Ranucci:

1910 United States Federal Census
about Joseph Cicone Name: Joseph Cicone
[Joseph Ciconi]
Age in 1910: 21
Estimated Birth Year: 1889
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Son
Father's name: Patrick Cicone
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's name: Mary Cicone
Mother's Birth Place: Italy

Household Members: Name Age
Patrick Cicone 50
Mary Cicone 46
Joseph Cicone 21
Raphael Cicone 12
Florence Cicone 9

so Matilda arrived after 16 apr 1910 and 5 March 1911... maybe she arrived no in New York port, because I searched so much and no luck.. maybe in Boston port....

I cannot find Matilda Ranucci( really Matilde in italian spell), I found only:
Boston Passenger and Crew Lists, 1820-1943
about Matilde Fasanelli
Name: Matilde Fasanelli
Arrival Date: 1 Dec 1910
Age: 16
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1894
Gender: Female
Ethnic Background: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ship Name: Canopic
Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachusetts
Friend's Name: Filippo Ranucci
Last Residence: Italy
Birthplace: Elena, Italy

joining at Filippo Ranucci father( maybe stepfather) in Sommerville, MA.... leaving in Elena (aka Gaeta) another father??? it is a strange ship's manifest...

abt the above ship's manifest, this Matilde Fasanelli joining at Filippo Ranucci in 20 Medford St, Sommerville, MA...
in 1910 ( census date 3 May 1910) I found only this possible record:
1910 United States Federal Census
about Cosmo Rannuis

Re: Grandmother born in Gaeta

maybe some thing with this record can make a bit of light on the mystery:
in 1912 Civita Prestagiovanni, trip crossed, in travel with Francesca Ranucci and joining at brother in law Cosmo Ranucci in Sommerville ( and father of Francesca Ranucci); Civita leaving the sister Maria in Elena/Gaeta:
Boston Passenger and Crew Lists, 1820-1943
about Civita Prestagiovanni Name: Civita Prestagiovanni
Arrival Date: 26 Jun 1912
Age: 53
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1859
Gender: Female
Ethnic Background: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ship Name: Cretic
Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachusetts
Friend's Name: Ranncci Conno ( Ranucci Cosmo)
Last Residence: Italy
Birthplace: Ueno, Italy (Elena)

pag 1 http://img839.imageshack.us/i/civitapre ... anni1.jpg/
pag 2 http://img703.imageshack.us/i/civitapre ... anni2.jpg/

so Civita Prestagiovanni was the sister of Anna Presta( full name: Anna Prestagiovanni, first wife of Cosmo Ranucci)..

after 1 month, Civita Prestagiovanni and Francesca Ranucci travelled:

Boston Passenger and Crew Lists, 1820-1943
about Civita Prestagiovanni
Name: Civita Prestagiovanni
Arrival Date: 9 Jul 1912
Age: 53
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1859
Gender: Female
Ethnic Background: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ship Name: Canopic
Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachusetts
Friend's Name: Ranners Copus (Ranucci Cosmo)
Last Residence: Italy
Birthplace: Elena, Italy

but also on this ship's manifest something is really strange..:

Francesca Ranucci declared of leaving the father Francesco(???) in Elena and joining at father Filippo Cosimo ( no surname) in 20 Madford St, Sommerville, MA ( same address where going Matilde Fasanelli!!! you remember: going to Filippo Ranucci father, 20 Madford St, Sommerville, MA...!!!)

Civita joining at brother in law Cosmo Ranucci, 20 Madford St, Sommerville, MA

images: ( lines 14 and 18)
pag 1 http://img851.imageshack.us/i/civitapre ... anni1.jpg/
pag 2 http://img580.imageshack.us/i/civitapre ... anni2.jpg/

at this point, I believe that Cosmo Ranucci full name was Filippo Cosmo Ranucci
or
Cosmo Filippo Ranucci
...
the problem, now, it is to understand if Matilde Fasanelli is really the daughter of Cosmo/Filippo Ranucci or the stepdaughter... by ship's manifest:

Boston Passenger and Crew Lists, 1820-1943
about Matilde Fasanelli
Name: Matilde Fasanelli
Arrival Date: 1 Dec 1910
Age: 16
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1894

Gender: Female
Ethnic Background: Italian (South) (Italian)

Well now we have the proof that Filippo Ranucci and Cosmo Ranucci was same person; most probably he had 2 first names Filippo and Cosmo;
you already knew abt the trip on 1926:
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Cosmo Ranucci Name: Cosmo Ranucci
Arrival Date: 3 May 1926
Birth Year: abt 1871
Birth Location: Italy
Birth Location Other: elena
Age: 55
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Martha Washington

shoemaker, wife Giovanna Ranucci in Elena/Gaeta; final destination Sommerville, MA; already in Sommerville, MA, USa from 1906 to 1925; joining at son Francesco Ranucci in Sommerville, MA, USA;

second trip, crossed:
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Filippo Rannucci Name: Filippo Rannucci
Arrival Date: 5 Dec 1927
Birth Year: abt 1871
Birth Location: Italy
Birth Location Other: elona
Age: 56
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Presidente Wilson

shoemaker, wife Giovanna Ranucci in Elena/Gaeta; final destination Sommerville, MA; already in Sommerville, MA, USa from 1906 to 1926; joining at son Francesco Ranucci in 6, Medford St, Sommerville, MA, USA.
I believe that Filippo/Cosmo Ranucci is your ancestor; that he made more weddings, because remaining widowed;
it is possible that the:
first wife was: Filomena Manna, and Civita Ranucci was born from this marriage;
second wife: Anna Prestagiovanni, maybe widow of Fasanelli; from her first marriage Anna Prestagiovanni had 1 daughter: Matilde Fasanelli; from second marriage: Francesca Ranucci
third marriage: Civita Prestagiovanni oldest sister of Anna Prestagiovanni; Civita married at Cosmo in 1912:
Civita Prestogiovanni
Massachusetts Marriages, 1841-1915

birth 1862 —, , Italy
marriage 1912 Aug 11;11 Aug 1912 —Boston, , Massachusetts
parents: Andreo Prestogiovanni, Marianna Saccone
spouse: Cosano Ranucci

really Civita was born in 1859... maybe from this marriage was born the son: Francesco Ranucci.. Civita was a bit old, but it is possible....
and because Civita was more old, died and Filippo/Cosmo remarried again at Giovanna.... I believe that he died in Gaeta....
that is just my suggestion, but the only possible....
all the best,
suanj

Wow, you've given me so much information to digest. I will put some sort of timeline together to try and make sense of it all. But the premise that Cosmo's first wife might have been Filomena Manna is a bit confusing because: in his 2nd marriage record he lists HIS MOTHER's name as Filomena Manna. Then in his daughter Civita's marriage record (Antonio DiNitto) she lists HER MOTHER as Filomena Manna.
Also I think the information you have provided is time sequenced in such a manner that Cosmo married Anna Prestagiovanni first, then married Civita. But I will see it better when I put all the information together in a timeline.
All of this information is invaluable to me. I can' thank you enough for all of the time you have put into it. I also see that you have a website that I would like to pursue further. I will send you an email from the site.
Thank you so very much,
Nancy

Hi, yes abt Filomena Manna.. was the mother of Cosmo or the wife? the name provided on marriage records are no much accurate... surely he made 3 weddings: Anna Prestagiovanni, Civita Prestagiovanni and Giovanna... unknown surname... now if Filomena Manna was the mother or the wife, it is a mystery... but I am sure that Matilde nee Fasanelli becoming in USA Matilde Ranucci and after the marriage Matilde Siccone.
Happy of to help you,

Hi Nancy, I found Civita Ranucci arrival:
Boston Passenger and Crew Lists, 1820-1943 about Covita Rannsei
Name: Covita Rannsei ( Civita RANUCCI)
Arrival Date: 9 Oct 1910
Age: 15
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1895
Gender: Female
Ethnic Background: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ship Name: Sannio
Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachusetts
Friend's Name: Filippe Covimo ( Filippo Cosmo: Filippo Cosmo Ranucci really, living in 27 Bedford St Somerville, MA)
Birthplace: Eleria, Italy ( Elena)

pag 1 http://img580.imageshack.us/i/civitaranucci1.jpg/
http://img819.imageshack.us/i/civitaranucci2.jpg/

in same travel, but crossed the sister Matilde; what is strange that the surname is spelled Paganelli and not Fasanelli! same final destination, but nobody next of kin for Civita, instead Matilde italian contact was the her uncle Francesco SPADA
a Antonio Spada travelled in 1920 and joining also at Cosmo Ranucci...
Boston Passenger and Crew Lists, 1820-1943
about Antonio Spada
Name: Antonio Spada
Arrival Date: 7 Sep 1920
Age: 27
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1893
Gender: Male
Ethnic Background: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ship Name: Cretic
Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachusetts
Friend's Name: Cosmo Ranucci
Last Residence: Italy
Birthplace: Elena, Italy

wife Carmina in Elena and joining at brother in law Cosmo Ranucci, 42 Medford st Somerville, MA..
as this Antonio Spada is brother in law of Cosmo, is a mystery also...

Now, we know that Matilde arrive in USA 2 months after Civita arrival:
Boston Passenger and Crew Lists, 1820-1943
about Matilde Fasanelli
Name: Matilde Fasanelli
Arrival Date: 1 Dec 1910
Age: 16
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1894
Gender: Female
Ethnic Background: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ship Name: Canopic
Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachusetts
Friend's Name: Filippo Ranucci
Last Residence: Italy
Birthplace: Elena, Italy

pag 1 http://img90.imageshack.us/i/matilde1.jpg/
pag 2 http://img199.imageshack.us/i/matilde2.jpg/

the Matilde birth surname is spelled 1 time Paganelli and 1 time Fasanelli; but only Paganelli exist currently in Gaeta...

Hoping helpful,

Sounds like Francesco and Antonio Spada were uncles of Matilde and brothers-in-law of Cosmo. The mystery is where the connection is?
I have also been looking a couple of days for manifest for my grandfather Joseph Siccone. I see that in the 1910 census he says he arrived in 1902, but in the 1920 census he says he arrived in 1897. In both the 1910 and the 1920 census his mother, Marie says she arrived in 1987. Perhaps they both came together in 1897.

Thank you for more information...it is very helpful.
