Calla Family - Mammola, Reggio, Calabria

Post by claudinew »

Would anyone have information on the Calla family of Mammola, Reggio Calabria? My great-grandmother was Maria Rosa Calla (b. 1897 d.1998). She died in Philadelphia. Her parents were Vincenzo Calla and Elisabetta Longo.

Thank you!

Claudine,
Welcome to the Forum!
Are these your family pages on ancestry. com
Whittley, Moss, Morrone, Calla Family Tree
Have you been able to locate all of your family's US records (military, ship manifests, naturalization, etc)?
Do you need help with how to research your family in Mammola?
Thank you, Valarie

He died in Philadelphia on Nov 3, 1941. He was married to Maria Rosa Calla (b.1897 d.1998) and they had three daughters, Elisabetta, Angela and living daughter.

I believe they were from Mammola, Reggio, Calabria. My living great aunt does not remember the name of Guiseppe's parents. I know that Guiseppe and macri are very common names in that aprt of Itlay, but by chance would anyone know who his parents were or how to obtain records?

Is there a list of churches on the web for Mammola? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Macri/Calla`

Checking the 1935 manifest for Rosa and her daughters, it indicated that daughter Angela was a US Citizen born abt 1930.
Although the second page of the manifest states they hadn't been in the US before, it would have been unusual for a 'US Citizen' error to be made.
Perhaps Angela was a 'US Citizen' because her father was naturalized?

Valarie,

Wow! Thank you for your reply. It has been very helpful. Yes, my tree on ancestry is the one you noted. I think I may have had issues with finding all this information because of an error with Guiseppe's birthdate. My aunt, his daughter is not going to believe this!

I will definitely look into writing to Mammola using the form letter link you sent. I heard that they are not very open to providing records (according to a genealogist that I've been in contact with recently).

If you ahve any other tips you'd like to share I'd be glad to here them. You've been extremely helpful!! Many thanks!!

:D Claudine
I'm so glad we could help!
We have several members with family from Mammola.
You may want to send forum moderator Nuccia a PM in case she doesn't see your post.
I believe she has extracted records for her family from Mammola by using the microfilm at the Family History Library.

Your great grandmother Maria Rosa Calla was my great aunt. I.e. She was my maternal grandmother's sister. I met her as a child. My grandmother, Maria Carmela Calla, died in 2013 in Mammola. She was born in 1916 and married Giovanni Sansalone who died in 1994 in Mammola. Who are your parents? My mother is Concetta Sansalone. She has fond memories of your great-grandmother and of Elizabeta Longo (her grandmother and your great-great grandmother) who she grew up with. My mom knows your great grandmother's children so she would know your grandfather or grandmother.

Thanks for your reply mammolacanadian. I was very excited to see your response this morning. My grandmother is now deceased, and so is her sister Angie. The other sister, Theresa is still living and in fact I saw her yesterday. Can you email me privately? I'd love to share my parents names, and more family info with you. I can be reached at claudine_whittley@hotmail.com
