Post by Raro1984 »

Hello,

I am trying to locate information on my Grandfather Joseph J Rossetti B. 1901 or 1900 in Italy, immigrated to the US around 1915. The only information I can find is that his Father's last name was Rosetto.

I believe that he was from Southern Italy.

If anyone thinks they may have information, please share it.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Hello, :D

Do you know what your Grandmother's name was and where the family lived in the U.S.A.
A census would help, since I haven't found a Joseph born about 1900 and arriving here in abt 1915.

Thank you,
Paul

I agree; really need some additional information here.

Wife's name, where settled in the US, names of children and approximate year of birth, etc.

All of this info assists in finding various records (censuses, draft registrations, etc) which can ultimately point to an immigration record and others.

Hello,

Thank you for your interest. I found some more information yesterday. It looks like my actual surname is ROSSOTTO.

Great Grandfather was Sebastian Rossotto B. 11 Nov 1868 in Italy and D. 4 July 1940 In California.

My Great Grandmother is Possibly Anna (Vai) Rossotto born approx. 1875.

Sebastian immigrated in 1903 wife and children (Guiseppe and Clemintina) arrived in 1908.
Immigrated into New York, eventually settled in San Francisco California.

According to census information Guiseppe is possibly my Grandfather's real name which he changed to Joseph sometime between 1908 and 1920.
Let me know if this helps. Thank you again. :D

A side note: Joseph (Guiseppe) Rossotto (AKA Rossetti, Rosetto) - Wife Was Angeline Beggio B. in California 2 June 1913

Also on this list are several passengers with surname VAI, and another with surname ROSSOTTO

ALESSANDRIA is both a city and a Province in Northern Italy. To search for Italian records on Sebastiano and his wife you will need to learn if he was born in the town/city of Alessandria, or in one of the MANY other towns in Province of Alessandria, since civil records are held at the town level. :-)

Hi Carmine,

Yes, I just found this one, too!

It looks like it reads MONCUCCO - both under mother's name (Anna's mother - Maria Luna) and on Place of birth...

There is a Moncucco Torinese just northwest of Alessandria, but in Piedmont Region, Province of Asti...

Another possibility is MONTACUTO in Alessandria Province... :?

Maybe it shows up on Clementina's naturalization papers? :-)

That is the closest guess I came up with as well. Check this out:
The Province of Asti was created on April 1st 1935 by Royal Decree No. 297 of King Victor Emmanuel III. It was detached from the existing Province of Alessandria.

Don't you just love it when things come together so nicely? :)

I am annoyed by the inability to find either a WWI or WWII draft card for Giuseppe. Both should exist, and both would have his exact date of birth...

As far as the WW1 and WW2 draft cards, I know from family stories that my Grandfather (Guiseppe) Misrepresented his age so that he could serve in the Navy. It is the same issue I have had with finding that info.

Thank you all so much for your help! This is getting exciting now!

Is it common for people to adjust their given names multiple times? It seems that Clemintina is also Clemintine, Rosette, and Clemins.

The anglicization of given names is very common: Giuseppe became Joseph, Paolo became Paul, Maria often became Mary, Vincenzo (oddly enough) usually became James/Jimmy, Guglielmo became William, and on and on.

The other problem you are seeing with Clementina is more likely due to the census-taker rather than the deliberate intention of she or her parents to mess with her name. If you look at the 1910 census, for example, you see that neither Sebastiano nor Anna spoke English; when the census-taker (one Mr. Smith) arrived and started asking questions, he either carried on a conversation in broken Italian/broken English, or he used one of the children to interpret for him. There were a lot of problems with this system and the resulting census data always needs to be taken with a few grains of salt.

As an example, my paternal grandfather's first name was Giuseppe. In one census, the entire family is listed with surname Jessup; my grandfather's actual surname became his given name, and the other family members are listed with correct (but misspelled) given names. It took me a very, very, long time to find that particular census; I did so only by searching page-by-page the entire census for the town in which I knew they resided at the time.

Using the above "clues" - I know this may be a longshot :-D
This Joseph was 36, a baker, and gave no address for wife or next of kin :?:
His wife Angeline Beggio would have been 17 at this time... do you know when they married?
