Salvatore Aiello: Terrasini/Balestrate to San Pedro/Mexico

Post by seabreezes1 »

Looking for the fate of the grandfather of an Italian cousin. He may have moved to Mexico from San Pedro CA circa 1920.

Salvatore Aiello s/o Antonino Mariano Aiello & Anna Orlando, was born on 8 Jan 1878 in Terrasini, Sicily. He left his wife, Maria Grazia LoPiccolo and only child, Anna, in Balestrate in 1903 when he emigrated. His in-laws prevented their dtr from emigrating. The last document on Salvatore is his 1918 draft registration which puts him as a laborer in a San Pedro lumber yard, and living at 583 8th Street. However, about 1923, two people visited his grown dtr on his behalf and encouraged her to emigrate or at least visit because her father wanted to know her. However, Anna was married with a child and did not leave Sicily. Family story is that he had left San Pedro and he was living with a Mexican woman, either in southern CA or in Mexico.

Can anyone help?

Thank you!

Could be.... thank you. My Italian cousin says he may have also been in New Mexico, rather than Mexico or in addition to Mexico. He seems to have ranged a little in that region. Ultimately, they believe he was alive circa 1923 and living with a woman, but no longer in San Pedro. Whether he had children with her, and whatever happened to him is a total blank that apparently ate at his dtr, Anna, her entire life and is continuing to plague his grand-dtr.

I believe in Mexico, because no records in New Mexico as a well in the California... and in all USA..

Salvatore was no naturalized in WWI draft registration card (12 sep 1918), and if he, after, emigrated in Mexico, or remained in USA, however by Consulate the death certificate was sent in Balestrate or Terrasini... that is possible...

or maybe he remained in USA and changed the name...

after the trip in Mexico( 1917; and I am sure that is the right Salvatore) he was in San Pedro -surely -until 12 sep 1918...

so after this date we know no more; no appearing in 1920 census..
almost no with name Salvatore/Sam Aiello
it is a mystery....

Thank you, Suanj -

It is a mystery, but changing his name would make sense if he was a bigamist or embarrassed by his abandonment of his wife for the other woman. That's a good suggestion. He didn't even contact his dtr directly in 1923 - he sent emissaries. However, you can sympathize with him if his wife refused to join him.

In any event, the history of the Spanish Flu in San Pedro, which he survived, is very interesting. http://www.ambergristoday.com/content/2 ... -san-pedro

Hi, after long search, I am a bit positive that this record is abt Salvatore Aiello 1920 United States Federal Census about Saritolo Ayala
Name: Saritolo Ayala
[Saritela Ayala]
Home in 1920: Township 13, Placer, California
Age: 39
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1881
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Patient
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Marital Status: Widowed
[Married]
Race: White
Sex: Male
Year of immigration: 1904
Able to read: No
Able to Write: No
Neighbors: View others on page
the name is mispelled, but I am sure that is Salvatore Aiello name ... but I know not if is the right Salvatore Aiello; patient in Weimar Joint Sanatorium of Township 13, Placer, CA; he declared himself widow, but really this is the only record matching enough with the Salvatore age and arrival year... I cheched in all California, and the others people with same name, but they are different persons;

this 1920 census could be right; in same sanatorium:

Guadalupe Gonzales-b. Mexico- age 33- imm. 1916
Ange Knight -b. Mexico-age 26- imm. 1904

Understood. There is no certainty, and we may never have a definitive answer..... but we know he was alive in 1920, but not where and nothing after the early 20s, so this is a possibility. In any case, it paints a grim picture of what could have happened to those immigrants who disappeared during this time frame.... if survived the Flu of 1918-1919, perhaps not tuberculosis.

Many thanks, once again :)

Yes - although 1923 is an estimated year..... based on memories that Anna was a young mother at the time.
Yes - emissaries were Sicilians he'd been in touch with. Unfortunately, so many of the players were illiterate. There are no paper documents, and no one living who was directly involved. Vague hearsay that his 2nd "wife" was named Providenza, and assumed Sicilian.

We really don't know..... this is someone remembering someone saying something from over 50 years ago, and even then, not definite. "living with a woman in Mexico" became "maybe in New Mexico, her name might have been Providenza, and she was probably Italian/Sicilian."
