Monument & Flag/Military Identification

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

Monument & Flag/Military Identification

Post by JML77 »

I'd appreciate it if someone could provide information on the below photos. Specifically, I'm trying to confirm if the monument pictured is in the town of Ripabottoni (WW1 war memorial?), and also what the flag pictured in the other photos relates to. The men in one of the flag photos seem to be wearing some sort of commemorative buttons on their uniforms too. I think that all the photos were taken in Ripabottoni sometime between WW1 and WW2.

This link will show you the Monumento ai Caduti in Ripabottoni.
It's not the one of the photos...
On the site you see also the same postacard you posted :D

http://www.ripamici.it/storia/caduti/monument.html

The monument of the photo is very "magnificent" I don't believe it was in a little town...

Hi,
I agree with Laura (ciao Laura). That monument could not be in a small town. As you will see, the monument is in Palermo. Here are some pics:

Ciao Livio! Vuoi dire che ho preso un granchio? Did I drop a clanger?
The pic originally posted by JML77 seems an old one. I read that in the years columns were added and changes took place. So, today it doesn't look exactly as it was in the past but the statue at the top, to me, looks the same......

http://www.ferentino.org/storia_monumenti_nike.php

Thank you for all the feedback, but unfortunately I am not able to understand the Italian replies. I see similar monuments in some of the photos that you have linked, but I would appreciate if someone could confirm which town the one in my photos comes from. Someone mentioned Palermo above, but as far as I know none of my relatives or their friends were ever there. Also, keep in mind that the scale of the monument may appear larger than it really is if you compare the solo photo to the ones of the men on the cannon in front of it in the second photo. I am pretty sure that there is a WW1 monument in Ripabottoni, but I am just not sure that this is the one in my photos.

Also, does anyone have any idea what the flag is in those other photos?

I apologize about the italian idiom we used.. we "know" each other also on an italian genealogy forum :D

We didn't found the correct monument but we are 100% sure it's not the monument in Ripabottoni because the monument in Ripabottoni is this one (and we both think that the monument of the postacard is too "magnificent" to be placed in a little twon as Ripabottoni):

monument:
http://www.ripamici.it/storia/caduti/caduti8.jpg

http://www.ripamici.it/accade/index.html

http://www.ripamici.it/storia/largo/cap5/largo5.html

This is the link to the same postcard that you posted (the one with the "invitation" to donate something to build the monument)

http://www.ripamici.it/storia/caduti/caduti3.jpg

http://www.ripamici.it/storia/caduti/caduti4.jpg

these are the photos of the soldiers coming from Ripabottoni died in the first World War:

http://www.ripamici.it/storia/caduti/caduti.html

We were unable to find the monument you posted, maybe it was destroyed? Are you sure it was in the area of Ripabottoni?

About the Flag... I believe it was the Banner of the catholic "Società di San Michele Arcangelo" , there is a photo very similar on this web page, cap.III :

http://ripabottonesi.com/montecastello_01.html

This Catholic Society was founded to "oppose" the Christian Catholic population of Ripabottoni against the people (emigrants) coming back from the U.S. who were bringing new religions (protestant, evangelism)...
