"Stato delle Anime" - Census?

Post by LeandraCat »

I found "Stato delle Anime" for a family I am researching. I have never come across this type of a record before. It looks like a Census of sorts.
How do I read something like this? Why do some kids have ages next to them and some do not?

I am referring to the attached...left-hand side "Sebastiano Brusca Family".

Thanks!
Julia

P = pater familias = capofamiglia (Head of household)
C = comunicato (Communion)
Ch = Cresimato (Confirmation)
I bambini che non avevano ancora fatto la comunione venivano indicati con la loro età (The children still not in age of Communion were listed with their real age)

literally means state of the souls which was the parish's way to account for a census of sorts. most parishes performed them at regular intervals. in my "hometown" they were performed in 1627, 1640, 1649, 1654 and into the 18th century. they are a great source of information for families and ages.

It is the first time I encountered these! They are great, but too bad there is no index :(

What does the abbreviation "neph's" mean next to a child's name?
See attached - TOP LEFT - "Blanca neph's an. 5"

Nepotis (maybe a corrupted form of Nepos) means nipote (niece).

The same word nipote also means grandchild as well as niece or nephew. Which can be a bit difficult in understanding the relationship.
